Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as together we welcome the arrival of a fresh, all-invigorating new liturgical year. Although its opener, the Advent season, begins within nature’s darkest, coldest season, it loses no time to herald the certain coming of the Light of the World. Advent has been concisely described as a season of hope to nurture peace and experience joy in anticipation of the love made incarnate through Jesus. Our Advent wreathes are set aflame with this truth. Seven Sisters might keep that glowing going through the graces of the rich readings and biblical themes of Advent to enliven our Apostolate prayers.May we remain aware that all the while we live these Advent and Christmastide days, we are within the concluding, lingering embrace of the Jubilee Year (all the way until January 6). And Sisters, this will not happen for another 25 years. Truly we are given every opportunity for every grace and blessing.
Sometimes things are so close or too familiar that we miss seeing them. Let us consider figuratively lighting a candle each week in Advent to reflect anew on how its theme may guide our thoughts and Apostolate prayers. The priest for whom we pray is embracing these same liturgical themes. In considering the first and second comings of Christ, let us allow the sacred mission of Advent to influence our prayer offerings.
+HOPE: The first candle (Prophecy Candle) hearkens us to Isaiah’s foretelling of the birth of Christ and God’s promises that would be fulfilled through the birth of the Messiah, Jesus. Our hope is rooted in the unchanging nature of God, who is our Hope. Our related prayersfor the priest/bishop might include his growth in the theological virtue of hope; his perseverance in a current personal difficulty; or a sharpened ability to offer hopeful pastoral words or counsel in due season.
+PEACE:The second candle (Bethlehem Candle) portrays the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Building on the hope of the Prophecy Candle that after all of the division, destruction, and dispersion of the kingdom in the Old Testament, peace on Earth seems within reach. Jesus is the royalty of Peace, the Prince. Jesus does not live aside from the Names He bears, but perfectly lives them. Our related prayers for the priest/bishop might include his growing ability to embrace tranquility in the midst of a day’s challenges; his action toward seeking reconciliation for himself or others; or that he might embody and be witness to a peace that surpasses all understanding.
+JOY: The third candle (Shepherd’s Candle) ushers us into a joyful expectancy and action akin to the shepherds who journeyed to Jesus in Bethlehem and also regarding our swelling joy in His anticipated return. Our related prayers for the priest/bishop might include an ever-growing interior intensity that God is ever-near and works all for good; becoming an authentic lighthouse of joy for others; or that he may serve as an unwavering model of surrendering to God’s Will in and with joy.
+ LOVE: The fourth candle (Angel’s Candle), points to the message of God’s love heralded through the angels at Christ’s birth. Our related prayers for the priest/bishop might include opening wider still the doors of his heart to receive God’s love to be a generous conduit for others; casting out fear in himself and others due to a growing wellspring of love; or influencing conversations through words that are seasoned with merciful and healing love.
Our Advent days look to the future based on the surety of the past, and yet remaining true to a present reality. Our Lord comes to us further than we go to Him. He came so very low… to the lowliness and dirt of stable. He meets us in this intersection of time and offers the abundant gift of His graces. His most generous Gift remains the genius of the Incarnation. All gifts flow from the reality of this. Let us intensify our prayers for our Brothers in Christ in celebration of such a gift – and may we never tire, never wane, never quit… and may we find benefit and abundance of graces in journeying these Advent days very much alongside them and with them … in the glow of the Advent candles.
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest Eternal gratitude continues as you each offer a daily wee Hail Mary for me. “One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). Pray that I will not ‘spoil the beautiful work that God has entrusted…’ (St Teresa of Calcutta). Your emails, notes and calls always arrive to my heart door at the just the right moment! Financial sacrifices are for 100% furtherance of the Apostolate. Your letters of testimony are beautiful and edifying! What glory is given to God through them! Be assured of my continued daily prayers for you at the altar.

“Recognizing the immense power of the Mystical Body of Christ when united in prayer—and the profound need to support our priests—I knew immediately that the Seven Sisters Apostolate was something I wanted to be part of. I have found a tangible way to offer spiritual support—quietly, consistently, and in union with others who share the same desire to uphold our clergy in prayer. Each Holy Hour is not just an offering for one priest, but a moment of deep communion with Christ, who Himself intercedes for His Church. In that sacred silence, I am reminded that prayer, though unseen, strengthens the very foundation of the Church and unites us in a hidden network of grace that sustains those who shepherd us.” (Julie, Michigan)
“I grew up in the Catholic faith and have fallen away multiple times due to various circumstances. Every time, God has been so merciful and loving, He places a priest in my life that brings me back to the Church. The priest rekindles the flame for Jesus. The priests sacrifice so much to be shepherds for so many souls. I feel the very least I can do is pray for them.” (Stacy, Texas)
“When our parish added a third priest, I readily joined. Your website is amazing. Thank you for all the treasures found within.” (Ann Marie, Indiana)
“I was introduced to the Apostolate from a brochure. The moment I read about it, my heart was drawn to the concept. I have been humbled at how quickly the ladies I invited have been eager to say yes.”(Amy, Missouri)
“I have become more and more convicted of how desperately our priests need our prayers! We need good strong and holy shepherds of our flocks, and our priests have quite the burden to carry!” (Rosie, Kansas)
“I feel blessed to pray for our priest. It is something I can do behind the scenes to help. My prayer time has been very peaceful. I love the recommended prayers. I now even go in other days when I’m free to sit in front of the tabernacle. I was asked to be an Anchoress and have a great team of prayerful women.” (Alicia, Florida)
“We often reach out to our parish priest inviting them to our home for meals and celebrations. I feel the Lord has placed on my heart the importance of including them in our family’s lives. Participating in the ministry of Seven Sisters adds another layer of service to our priests.” (Jennifer, Massachusetts)
“I first became involved as a substitute, stepping in to pray when needed. It didn’t take long before I felt a strong calling to become a permanent part of this unbroken chain of prayer for our priests.” (Aide, Indiana)
ELIJAH’s HELPERS: Intercessors in this group are dedicated to offering Holy Hours for priests in various forms of crisis (no names known) within a particular Diocese. Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as together we cross this month’s threshold into the bright and glorious Solemnity of All Saints. Here we rejuvenate our thoughts to remember that while our baptism opens us to a sufficiency of God’s graces for this journey Homeward, the fullness of sanctity will be possessed in heaven. We have a road set before us to trek! As newly canonized St Carlo Acutis reminds, “Heaven has been waiting for us forever.”November 1st should rouse that deep hope in all who follow Christ, but maybe especially Seven Sisters, for this is the concerted aim of our prayers: sanctity for the recipient of our prayers – nothing less! And in the ways of God, we full well know that we too, in and through our offerings of prayers, become wealthy with graces. “By standing before the Eucharistic Christ, we become holy” (St Carlo Acutis).
On this Solemnity (2006) Pope Benedict XVI delivered a stirring homily offering several thoughts that Seven Sisters might find usefulto incorporatein the Holy Hour:
Looking at the shining example of the Saints reawakens within us the great longing to be like them. All priests share the prayerful discipline of the Liturgy of the Hours and the Liturgical calendar where testimonies of saints present themselves daily and abundantly. Perhaps pray that these examples will enkindle renewed yearning for personal sanctity.
(The Saints) are all brought together by the common desire to incarnate the Gospel in their lives under the impulse of the Holy Spirit… This speaks for itself toward a powerful way to pray for the recipient of our prayers. Come, Holy Spirit. You are the Lord and Giver of new life!
To be a Saint requires neither extraordinary actions or works nor the possession of exceptional charisms. Let us more intentionally allow the Holy Spirit to guide our prayers as to His Will and Way for the one priest/bishop for whom we pray. Our Lord works in and through the ordinary.
The Church’s experience shows that every form of holiness, even if it follows different paths, always passes through the Way of the Cross, the way of self-denial. Here rests the vital element toward sanctity. Seven Sisters appear remarkably sensitive to when and how to offer prayers of support when the exterior/interior rough waters arrive for the priest/bishop for whom prayers are tendered. Pope Benedict’s point seems to urge prayer for greater surrender to God’s Will.
Holiness demands a constant effort, but it is possible for everyone because, rather than a human effort, it is first and foremost a gift of God, thrice Holy. This thought can serve to build confidence that our prayers are not too lofty, but fitting to God’s gift for every priest/bishop.
The Beatitudes show us the spiritual features of Jesus…this mystery …and invites us to follow Jesus and thus walk toward it. Utilizing the Beatitudes as a guide of praying for sanctity for a priest/bishop will surely prove fruitful – for them and us!
The Saints are friends and models of life for us. Let us invoke them so that they may help us to imitate them and strive to respond generously, as they did, to the divine call. In particular, let us invoke Mary, Mother of the Lord and mirror of all holiness. The Apostolate Work has a plethora of Saintly advocates to call upon. Beseeching increased friendships with them for our priest/bishop is prudent. Seven Sisters already cultivate and bear the habit during every Holy Hour to plead for an increased devotion to Mary for the priest/bishop. Truly, as the Holy Father states in this homily, she is the mirror of all holiness.
The unyielding, probing gaze of the woman in Cynthia Sheppard’s painting can serve to remind that we too are fully embraced in the call to holiness, life’s wonderful adventure withChrist (St JPII). As we present our sacrifices of prayers for our priests, we are not forgotten by heaven. Our individual fiats to the Apostolate work – for this time, for His purposes – all lean toward the goal of holiness! Together we anticipate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Nov 23) marking the culmination of the liturgical year. He Himself speaks to us: Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done (Rev 22:12). Let us unite in confidence with the prayer of the Church: “Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat!”.
“Hi! I am a senior at University of St. Thomas! I heard about the Seven Sisters through my mom, so I joined about a year ago. Through my experience, I learned how to pray for a priest and thank God for everything they do. I am excited to be the new anchoress for this year!” (Jacqueline, Texas)
“7+ for 1 borne from love and gratitude. Sometimes you can almost feel the bonds growing. It’s called the Body of Christ! And the shepherds and their flocks are loving it!” (Carmen, Kansas)
“As soon as I looked up the info, it resonated. The charism of intercession is one I have been discerning, so it made sense that the Holy Spirit would lead me this direction. I contacted our local anchoress and our pastor was already covered each day, so I offered to be a backup. The next day we found out that we have a new parochial vicar! This was another God-wink that this is for me.” (Amy, Florida)
“After Sunday mass one week, it was on my heart that our pastor had so much responsibility on his shoulders and could use prayer. Within a few weeks, a woman involved in Seven Sisters in a nearby church asked if I would be interested in starting a group. I’m honored to be able to do this.” (Frances, Pennsylvania)
“In July I attended a retreat in Montana. Three ladies from Wisconsin were describing the wonders of the Apostolate. I said WOW! Every priest needs and deserves this. I started a group.” (Marianne, Florida)
“Thank you for your support and information. I take this position (as Anchoress) seriously and will honor Father and my Father in heaven too.” (Lu, Florida)
“3 years ago (age 29), I was confirmed and received the Holy Eucharist. My love for the Church, the Sacraments, and Christ continually grows. I was asked to pray for our Priest, becoming a Seven Sister and a part of this beautiful ministry! I had a wonderful year praying for our amazing Priest. This is an absolutely vital ministry, all Priests need prayers, and I do hope this can spread to every Parish!” (Shawna, New York)
“Our priest attributes sustenance of his priesthood on the power & graces of these Hours.” (Tobey, Wisconsin)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ in this month of so much! Our lands, our larders, and our liturgical calendars are brimming with bounty. October draws us together in celebration of a litany of saints, and all along the way we clutch our rosaries. Oh, glorious month dedicated to these mystery-laden beads of Our Lady!
None among us likely needs much convincing regarding taking up a rosary. Testimonies and encouragements fill bookshelves. Our own experiences undoubtedly fuel a desire for this familiar prayer. And while one does not have to offer even one rosary to gain entrance beyond the heavenly veil, those that practice the discipline and know its gains, could likely rally up a good argument for it. Many Seven Sisters, myself included, often (or always) offer a rosary as part of the Apostolate Holy Hour. Here we take Mary’s hand, already extended, and carry with us thoughts and intercessions for the priestly recipient of our prayer. Here Mary invites us to walk with this brother in Christ, beseeching graces that he lives more deeply in the ways of Her Son. Here Mary helps us sharpen both our vision and hearing that we may linger along the way to discover how to specifically pray for this specific priest/bishop. Here Mother Mary beckons us on the path she herself lived. Our Lord is present in every step. How opportune to take pause and offer freshly directed prayers for the recipient of our prayers as they relate to the Rosary’s mysteries and his life. Entering the prayers of the rosary as a little one and not the master, unrushed and for the benefit of another, proves a fruitful humility.
In the serene and striking Virgin of the Rosary, Flemish painter Massys, portrays Jesus as extending His Hand in an appeal to prayer. How fitting to us since the Work of Seven Sisters is His. Through it, His mission is for a greater conformity of His priestly Brothers to Himself. The eye-soothing golden tones of the bulk of the canvas achieve an even-richer depth from an intermingling of the vivid crimsons, also the color choice of the rosary. Sacrificial love begets heavenly reward – for them, for us. A fruit of Rosary meditation is a steady unfolding of an interior grasp of this high cost of union with God, making the Rosary ideal as we intreat sanctity for the priest/bishop for whom we pray. Truly, the more we pray, the more we grow in this immense love of God, and steadfastly desire it for “the other”.
In one of his sermons, Saint Augustine encouraged his listeners: “Do not have your heart in your ears, but your ears in your heart”. Recently Pope Leo XIV commented on this: “What do we need to do in order to practice how to listen with the ears of our heart? The world is full of noise, and our heads and hearts can be flooded with many different kinds of messages. These messages can fuel our restlessness and steal our joy. As a community of faith, striving to build a relationship with the Lord, may we strive to filter the noise, the divisive voices in our heads and hearts, and open ourselves up to the daily invitations to get to know God and God’s love better. When we hear that loving, reassuring voice of the Lord, we can share it with the world as we strive to become one in Him.” What sage advice as we work to listen more attentively as to how to pray for our priests. In many ways the Rosary can perfectly serve to help as we discover again and again its mysteries in light of Scripture, in harmony with the Liturgy and in the context of our daily lives (Pope JP II).
Sometimes meditations for the mysteries of the Rosary – or even for each Hail Mary – help us welcome reflective silence to listen more intently as to how to continue in prayer. In March 2026, we will be celebrating 15 years of the Inspiration Dayof our Apostolate. In celebration, another invitation is extended. Prayerfully consider composing meditations for the Mysteries of the Rosary (or each Hail Mary) related to our prayers for priests, for compilation in a Booklet for use by Seven Sisters. Our goal: to publish seven sets of Reflections of the four Mysteries! Choose to offer all four of the Mysteries or one or two (which would be paired up with the offerings from others). Recently a group from Indiana sent us thought-provoking, beautiful Rosary mediations for priests using the Luminous Mysteries (posted on the Website). It was their gift that spurred this inspiration to solicit more as an offering of gratitude for the upcoming Anniversary of God’s Work!
The Rosary is both simple and complex, but always efficacious. The Fatima seer, Ven Lucia dos Santos summed it this way: “There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the power of the holy Rosary.” – Let us take up this challenge for our priests!
“My mother is a Seven Sister at my home parish. Her zeal for this Apostolate inspired me to continue it while I am at school. I am a cradle Catholic, who thankfully found a deeper meaning for the faith in college, and this group will continue to assist me in my spiritual journey.” (Kismet, Florida)
Added to a Remembrance page submission: “Rosalie was a shut in and unable to participate in church ministries. She was so grateful to be able to participate in this ministry. She loved the priest she prayed for. We miss her.” (Susan, Maryland)
“I wanted to ‘serve’ God, but I was very busy between work, school, and 5 sons, and when I saw the Seven Sisters announcement on the bulletin, I knew that’s where I could start. It has been a year already! Some weeks were more difficult than others, but I believe through quietly serving in prayer, not only was it helping Father, but it brought me and my family a lot of graces and blessings too. I would like to continue to serve quietly in the background, knowing God is there listening.” (Diana, Nebraska)
“Hello! I’ve been a Seven Sister for over two years and the former anchoress moved to a new town and asked me to take over. It has been a joy, blessing and honor to pray for our parish pastor these past few years and we pray that with the Holy Spirit’s help, we will keep this ministry going strong.” (Suzanne, New York)
“I believe that prayer for priests is the greatest gift we can give to the Church and our most important duty as laity, apart from our basic obligations as Catholics. I have a brother who is a priest as well, so this makes me even more keenly aware of this need! We have witnessed several really good changes in our parish since we began the Seven Sisters!” (Stephanie, California)
“I’ve been in this Apostolate for several years. I love that this is a ministry that is quiet and prayerful. It is with great honor that I continue to pray to strengthen priests …it is so beautiful and rewarding.” (Judi, Ohio)

SPANISH translation of Communique: Posted (and archived) on the Website. The translation link is sent with every Communique. Commitment Prayer/Guidelines Booklet in Spanish (on the Website – free download)
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ! As toddlers we likely all reveled in that unremitting climb up Mama’s or Papa’s legs onto their lap or into their arms. Triumph met with welcoming hugs. So too, we collectively bear a relentless interior longing of an ascent toward God. In his Confessions, St Augustine affirms: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Sacred Scripture highlights mountains as both symbol and reality of that journey to God. In the beginning, God dwelt and walked with us in Eden, situated on His holy mountain (Ezekiel 28:14). There heaven touched earth. Man’s choices expelled him, but mountains remain a link toward a renewal of heaven touching earth. Noah, Abraham, Moses and Elijah all met God on the mountain. Jesus proved mountaineer too. On them He was tempted, preached, prayed, healed, was Transfigured, in agony, bore the Cross and showed Himself Risen. Quite worth pondering in these meetings and moments are who was summoned, who responded, the trek to get there, and the return route too.
Our Catholic tradition is beautifully woven with this “lofty” Scriptural influence. Early temples and tabernacles, both modeled after Eden, portrayed their petit-mountains in the form of an altar. No Catholic Church is without its altar, its mountain. Most of our Churches invite us to begin a physical ascent by entrance steps to the front doors. Sanctuaries echo this with more steps leading the priest to the altar-mountain. Sacred Scriptures and homilies are traditionally proclaimed in an elevated ambo. At every Mass the priest calls us to lift up our hearts and join him in these heights. Yes, heaven touches earth here! And more… Did you know the platform a monstrance rests upon is called a tabor? Hearkening to the Transfigured Christ on Mt. Tabor (Matthew 17), the tabor elevates Jesus, bidding us to behold the radiance and glory of God emanating from His Eucharistic Presence. Oh, dear Seven Sisters, how often we come to the mountains! Scripture reminds that Our Lord calls His own to join Him there (see Mark 3:13 above), awakening our senses sometimes through the likes of thunder and cloud, sometimes in whisper.
This month (September 7, the vigil of Mary’s birthday) Pope Leo XIV will canonize Bl. Carlo Acutis and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati. Pier Giorgio prized mountain climbing, drawing many parallels between this passion and his Catholic life. He regularly organized excursions with friends as occasions for prayer, liturgies, and conversations about faith on the way up to and down from the summit.A month before he died, a photo portrays him during a tough climb, clinging to a rugged crag. On the photo, he wrote, “Verso l’Alto”—to the heights. Posthumously, it serves as a fitting motto of his pursuit of holiness.
In a Sept 2023 article in The Catholic Gentleman, Fr John Nepil (Denver, CO) unfolds the meaning of Verso l’Alto (my bolding added). “Verso is an Italian preposition often translated as to or towards. It is not a verb concerning action, but instead a preposition concerning orientation. … Alto is used as both an adjective meaning high, as well as a noun meaning height. The latter, used by Frassati, is significant because it is not the word for a physical mountain summit, which is la cima. It is also interesting to note that Alto is used in the Liturgy, which may be the way that Frassati, a daily communicant, came to consider the notion. As the priest prepares for the Eucharist Prayer, he says to the congregation, “In alto i nostri cuori” (literally to the heights, our hearts; in the English Missal translated as lift up your hearts). … This famous maxim (Verso l’Alto), properly understood, articulates something to be done while climbing. It expresses the Eucharistic heart in a body that climbs, and a soul that remains spiritually oriented towards a different summit – the height of Heaven. …”
Seven Sisters Apostolate offers an orientation and discipline of prayer that moves us toward and bring us “to the heights”. Our regularity of meeting Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, seeking His guidance and love for another, and unreservedly pouring out our sacrifices of prayer serve to embody an orientation that genuinely and deeply seeks holiness for another. Yes, the “heights” for another. All this is fueled by our collective, flourishing Eucharistic hearts. A spiritual bond between Seven Sisters in intercession in both jubilation in hope and compassion in suffering for the better for our brothers in Christ brings a sense of sweetness and lightness that enables us to experience the heights. Indeed, how often there is more to the place we are in, and to the people we are with, than we realize.
As wiggly toddlers at the knees of our parent, we wanted “up, up, up” – to be closer to our source of love – nearer the deep look of their eyes and whispers of love – and finally, in exhaustion of the journey, to rest our head near the heart. As Seven Sisters, let us remain little ones. As we make our weekly journey to and into our Holy Hours, the Lord is with us, He accompanies. Let us seek to know His eyes, His whisper and experience a leaning upon His Heart. Therein in each week’s journey He calls us “to the heights” for the concerns and aches and celebrations of the priest/bishop for whom we pray. As the psalmist encourages: I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2). As Isaiah encourages:I will bring these to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples (Isaiah 56:7). Dearest sisters in Christ, be not afraid – of the heights!
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest. Eternal gratitude continues as you each offer a daily wee Hail Mary for me. – Janette (Howe) +JMJ+sevensistersapostolate@gmail.com

MATTERS of the HEART:
“I was a part of a Seven Sister group my senior year of high school. This experience was pivotal as the week we began, my life turned upside down. The Apostolate kept me praying through this time and reminded me of the importance of Priests! I shared this experience with our Catholic Women’s group at St Nobert College. We decided to pray for our Pastor/Chaplain at SNC.” (Reese, Wisconsin)
“I discovered a Seven Sisters group and volunteered to be a sub. Learning the discipline of praying for one priest for the entire hour was an amazing gift and for honing my spiritual life. I started one without delay as a gift for our pastor. What a wonderful apostolate! I’m grateful to be a part of it.” (Krista, Connecticut)
“I am glad to belong and to pray for our priest.” (Nicoline, Cameroon)
“The Seven Sisters approach is personalized, allowing focused prayers to benefit one priest that I have some level of awareness of responsibilities, challenges, and difficulties he might face.” (Therese, South Carolina)
“Over the years, I have witnessed the struggles that many of our pastors have endured due to the expectations, misconceptions, pettiness, etc. that can go on. It will be a blessing for us all to dedicate daily prayer for him and his needs and intentions. I am grateful for the opportunity.” (Marylou, Florida)
“Our group feels called to pray for our retired priest as they enjoy the fruits of their labor and prepare for their calling from Christ to come home.” (Julie, Minnesota)
“This Apostolate keeps growing and giving and going!” (Renee, Virginia)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ! One hundred years ago (31 May 1925), during another Jubilee Year, our Apostolate’s priestly patron, St John Vianney, was canonized. His Feast Day: August 4th. In this centenary year, consider generously pledging something in gratitude to honor his life and patronage to us and to all priests. Think 100! Perhaps… offer 1oo prayers, sacrifices or acts of kindness; gift $100 to a priest or priestly cause; research 100 quotes of St John Vianney; inform 100 people about the work of Seven Sisters!
It has been said that there is a saint for every cause and a cause for every saint. Good news as surely we each have a holy cause!St Augustine offers a summation: “One is a life of faith, the other a life of vision; one is a life passed on pilgrimage in time, the other in a dwelling place in eternity; one is a life of toil, the other of repose; one is spent on the road, the other in our homeland; one is active, involving labor, the other contemplative, the reward of labor.” Personalities and missions run the gamut. A human ordinariness can sometimes cloak the interior of a soul full of the love that marks every saint. Some might say this of St John Vianney who was both tender and humble in appearance and demeanor.
In her series of tree paintings, painter Erika Pochybova-Johnson visually alludes to this. The detail highlighted here amply portrays the existence of vivid, fruitful life veiled beneath the soil. (In the full painting the stunning roots are 3-4 times what is shown here!) The branches on this tree are not yet blossoming, but there are colorful clues that a wealth of life is about to burst forth. The wellspring remains hidden. Challenged with seminary studies and self-confidence, the fledging priest, Fr John Vianney, was assigned to Ars, a forsaken part of France, because there “he would not disturb too much”. He was tasked with these parting words from the Vicar General, “There is not much love for God in that parish; you will bring some into it.” This challenge was literally taken to heart his full 41 years there! Seven Sisters can glean, gain and grow from the clear counsel and admirable life of our trusted companion and intercessor. St John Vianney, how can we bring more love where it is lacking?
Thoughts on prayer from our patron:
+ “Our prayer is an incense which He receives with extreme pleasure.”
+ “We see some persons who lose themselves in prayer like a fish in the water, because they are all for God. There is not division in their heart. Oh, how I love those generous souls!”
+ “When our heart is pure and united to God, we feel within ourselves a joy, a sweetness that inebriates, a light that dazzles us. …like two pieces of wax melted together… a happiness we cannot understand.”
Thoughts on Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from our patron:
+ “Our Lord is hidden there…See how good He is! He accommodates Himself to our weakness.”
+ “When we are before the Blessed Sacrament, instead of looking about, let us shut our eyes and our mouth; let us open our heart: our good God will open His; we shall go to Him, He will come to us, the one to ask, the other to receive; it will be a breath from one to the other.”
+ “Come, my soul, redouble thy fervor; thou art alone adoring thy God. His eyes rest upon thee alone.”
Thoughts on the priesthood from our patron:
+ “The priest has the key of the heavenly treasures; it is he who opens the door; he is the steward of the good God, the distributer of His wealth.”
+ “The priest is not a priest for himself. He is for you. After God, the priest is everything. Leave a parish twenty years without priests; they will worship beasts.”
+ “The priest will not understand the greatness of his office till he is in Heaven.”
In 1959, to commemorate the centenary of St JV’s death, Pope John XXIII reflected on the saintly life in an exceptional encyclical entitled Sacerdotii Nostri Primordia. The Pontiff said this: “St. John Mary Vianney is a person who attracts and practically pushes all of us to these heights of the priestly life.” Let us pray that St John Vianney will be this firm holy influence for all priests! Fifty years later (2009), Pope Benedict XVI used the 150th anniversary of St JV’s death as an impetus to inaugurate the Year for Priests, whose theme was “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests”. In the summer of 2010, near the close of the Year for Priests, the inspiration to offer a weekly Holy Hour for Fr Joseph Johnson presented itself. Roughly nine months later another invitation came during a Holy Hour offered on 24 March 2011 and in the Archdiocese of St Paul-Mpls where St John Vianney is named the co-patron with St Paul. All this – and more – rests in the Heart and Hand of God.
St John Vianney, pray for our priests and guide them! St John Vianney, pray for us and guide us! Help us to bring more love into our own hearts and into the hearts of those priestly brothers in Christ for whom we ardently pray… that together our interior lives may flourish and bear new life.
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest. Eternal gratitude continues as you each offer a daily wee Hail Mary for me. – Janette (Howe) +JMJ+ 651-283-0929; 43 Nord Circle Rd, St Paul, MN 55127; sevensistersapostolate@gmail.com

MATTERS of the HEART:
“When I enter churches and adoration chapels to pray, I see women I know there praying for their priest. It brings joy to my heart! May our joy abound and the Apostolate multiply! So much passion and heart go from us to our priests! Love that! Joyous in His work.” (Beth, Virginia)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we persist as Pilgrims of Hope in this Jubilee Year. Together we enter July, the month dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus. The Church invites us to delve deeper into this mystery of Christ’s extravagant offering of ransom for our sake. Our priestly Brothers in Christ, including our new Pope Leo, serve as mentors to help us more fully embrace the reality and wealth of such a Gift!
Unlike our schoolgirl mystery novels that brought us to tangible solutions, the lofty mysteries of the Faith move the heart serenely toward only glimpses to ponder, savoring each small fragment. All told, these insights are granted that we may know, love and serve more generously through Christ’s immense love that compels. In the opening chapter of his book, The Precious Blood, Fr Frederick W Faber, claims: “Every doctrine in theology is a call to the Precious Blood. Every ceremony in the Church tells of it. Every sermon that is preached is an exhortation to the use of it. Every Sacrament is a communication of it. Every supernatural act is a growth of it. Everything that is holy on the earth is either leaf, bud, blossom or fruit of the Blood of Jesus.” Through Faber’s ever-poetic-always-reflective style we can readily grasp how intimately tied the life of the priest is to the Precious Blood. As Seven Sisters we can take this cue to launch fresh prayers for our Brothers in Christ to not only understand and live the mysteries associated with the Blood of Christ, but to help those under their care to do likewise. Following are some Saintly prayers for potential use for the priestly recipients of your prayers:
Portraying Christ’s Blood as a veritable ocean of mercy, St Catherine of Siena offers this prayer which can be easily adapted, if led to do so, for one’s Hour: Precious Blood, Ocean of Divine Mercy: Flow upon ___! Precious Blood, Most pure Offering: Procure ___ every Grace! Precious Blood, Hope and Refuge of sinners: Atone for ___! Precious Blood, Delight of holy souls: Draw ___! Amen.
Christ’s Blood is a pool of purification. St Ephraem offers another prayer for our use: O Lord, ____ cannot go to the pool of Siloe to which you sent the blind man. But ____ has the chalice of Your Precious Blood, filled with life and light. The purer ____ is, the more (he) receives.
When worthily received, the Blood of Christ casts out demons and opens the way for God and His angels to swiftly come to one’s aid. St John Chrysostom prays it well and helps us do the same: Let ____, then, come back from that table like a lion breathing out fire, thus becoming terrifying to the Devil, and remaining mindful of our Head and of the love He has shown for (him)… This Blood, when worthily received, drives away demons and puts them at a distance from (him), and even summons to (him) angels and the Lord of angels… This Blood, poured out in abundance, has washed the whole world clean…This is the price of the world; by it Christ purchased the Church.”
The Blood of Christ profoundly influences lives. St Maximilian Kolbe helps us grow our knowledge and faith in the Blood of Christ and to pray to that end for our priestly Brothers in Christ: You come to ____ and unite Yourself intimately to (him) under the form of nourishment. Your Blood now runs in (his). Your Soul, Incarnate God, compenetrates (his), giving courage and support. What miracles! Who would have ever imagined such!
Giotto’s sapphire-hued depiction of the Crucifixion invites the heart to a tranquility and a summons to linger. The tumble of angels softly painted in this detail conveys a peacefulness. Even while intense emotion and grieving at the foot of the cross co-exists, the angels nonetheless reverently hover in a resolute holy endeavor of collecting every Precious drop of the Blood. It is heaven’s plan for our witness. Elsewhere in the pages of The Precious Blood, Fr Faber references the holy angels in a related way: “When the Blessed Sacrament is laid upon your tongue, —that moment and that act which the great angels of God look down upon with such surpassing awe, —the Blood of Jesus is throbbing there in all its abounding life of glory. It sheathes in the sacramental mystery that exceeding radiance which is lighting all heaven at that moment with a magnificence of splendour which exceeds the glowing of a million suns. You do not feel the strong pulses of His immortal life. If you did, you could hardly live yourself. Sacred terror would undo your life. But in that adorable Host is the whole of the Precious Blood, the Blood of Gethsemane, Jerusalem, and Calvary, the Blood of the Passion, of the Resurrection, and of the Ascension, the Bloodshed and reassumed. As Mary bore that Precious Blood within herself of old, so do you bear it now.”
Dearest sisters in Christ, what great graces indeed to be drawn deeper in the mysteries of our Faith, all the while considering the well-being and sanctity of “the other”, our priestly Brothers in Christ, as we do so. Surely the nourishment of our prayers draws from the wellspring of these sacred mysteries. Our Founding Chaplain, Fr Joseph Johnson, recently, quietly, shared with me: “Since my 25th Jubilee (31 May 2023) at every Mass when I raise the Chalice at the Consecration I pray for you and the Seven Sisters … every(his emphasis) Mass.” What an astounding and generous gift is conferred to us in these sacred acts and moments. How fitting to share this with you all across the globe in this beautiful month of July. May your heart be open wider still – to the cascade of graces that reach you every day from this big-hearted offering at the holy altar. Eternal gratitude, Fr JJ!
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest. Eternal gratitude continues as you each offer a daily wee Hail Mary for me. – Janette (Howe) +JMJ+ 651-283-0929; 43 Nord Circle Rd, St Paul, MN 55127; sevensistersapostolate@gmail.com

“One of the most meaningful chapters in my Catholic journey unfolded when I joined the Seven Sisters Apostolate. This commitment was not just a duty but a gift—one that deepened my connection to God and strengthened my resolve to support those who shepherd the faithful. In the stillness of adoration, I found peace, purpose, and the quiet assurance that faith is not just about believing—but about offering oneself in love, service, and devotion.” (Linda, Florida)
“My love for the Catholic faith and Eucharist is growing through formation and frequent Mass attendance. Without our priests there would be no Mass, so I’m happy to be praying for them! (Sheila, Canada)
“I felt called to pray for our Bishop ever since I attended an Ordination Mass last year. When I saw him, I saw Peter in him. All our clergy need our prayers.” (Lydia, Texas)
“The priest we were praying for passed away at 97. He fell when carrying in a couple vases of flowers from his backyard to put by his Mary statue. (He normally used a cane, but had both hands full, as the story goes.) The doctors were attempting surgery for his broken hip, and his heart failed. Father’s last request to me (a couple days before he fell) was to pray that he could say Holy Mass until the day he died… and he did right up to that fall!” (Deb, Indiana)
“Our priest just told me again on Friday how thankful he is for our prayers. Maybe in another month or two I will get through a whole Holy Hour without tears.” (Barbara, Kentucky)
“The Holy Spirit led me to Seven Sisters about 6 years ago. I have always had a special place in my heart for our priests, so I felt the one gift I could give them would be to pray a Holy Hour each week. I look forward to my Holy Hours, as I know I am doing God’s work in helping to take care of His shepherds through prayer. I am truly blessed and grateful to be a part of this sacred ministry.” (Adele, Virginia)
“Our priest asked that a flyer be put up regarding Pro Pace, praying for Priests in Purgatory. In a week I received seven requests. Every single sister said they prayed daily for the priests in Purgatory, and they felt that this was a calling meant for them. Ave Maria. Christus Vincit. (Connie, Louisiana)
“I became a Seven Sister last year and have found peace and an increase in my spiritual journey through this Hour of weekly prayer for Father.” (Laurie, Wisconsin)
