Overseer of the Eucharistic life… pray for us, guide us!
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ – Preceding the Sign of the Cross at Mass, a priest friend sometimes offers a ferverino regarding the life and love of the Saint of the day. He consistently concludes with, “St ____ loved the Lord Jesus Christ, the same Lord Jesus Christ we celebrate today.” Indeed! His statement causes one’s heart to fully embrace each Saint in the most fundamental way – through mutual love of Christ. One might apply this same sentiment from Christ Himself about His mother. We are created to embrace and welcome her fully, through the mutual and intense love of Christ.
Mary holds innumerable titles – enough to fill a litany to overflowing! How good of God to clearly guide, then endow, our Apostolate with the patronage of the Madonna of the Grapes. The title Madonna means ‘lady’. As Seven Sisters we look to Mary as the first and perfect disciple who is guiding us, while equally appreciating that her relationship as mother is inseparable. As the Lady of the Grapes, Mary is the overseer and caretaker of the Eucharistic life. Priests and bishops are charged with the same. EverySeven Sister shares a portion of that responsibility too. How fitting, then, for the Apostolate to esteem Mary under this title and seek her model!
Here in Mignard’s painted scene, Mary has chosen the grapes from the basket, leaving the two apples behind. She is the new Eve, offering life-giving food rather than forbidden fruit. The grapes appear as a rich purple hue, fresh and plump. The skins are intact. They have not yet been broken by the violence of the winepress. Neither Mary nor Jesus takes claim of the cluster of fruit, but together tenderly hold in seeming anticipation. The time has not yet come. Even Jesus Himself is not held in a grip, as might be typical for a wiggly lad of this age. Instead, Mary ever-so-slightly rests the flesh of only one thumb against his flesh. Her posture, hands and glance placidly echo a mirror image of Michaelangelo’s Pieta. Jesus here contentedly sits atop a pillow atop his mother’s lap, but with legs crossed, suggestive of the impending day of Golgotha. His muscles are full of life and chubby newness, being readied for the strength needed for that Day. Mary teaches Seven Sisters here. The Eucharistic life came through the greatest price – then and now. While we hold the earthly Eucharistic caretakers, our priests/bishops, in hearts of prayer, we do not seek to clutch nor control them. The blueprint of each priestly life is not ours to redraft. As sisters in Christ, our nearness rests in unyielding prayers, sacrifices and conviction that God’s Will be done in each priestly life. In quietness and trust is our strength (Isaiah 30:15). The Eucharistic life stands to be preserved through their hands, not counting the cost by them nor by us.
No matter how often one might look away and look again at this painting, the eye returns to the figure of Jesus, even though the smallest figure. His light-aglow Eucharistic-white robing beckons the glance. His intentional penetrating gaze draws ours. His curious gesture of peeking through the gossamer veil entices us. There is an intriguing shadow cast upon the Divine face. Collectively, all of these features reflectively hearken to the mystery of the Eucharistic hiddenness of our Lord. Mary, as caretaker and overseer, holds the posture of humility, peace and contemplation – hallmarks of the life of a Seven Sister. She is not indifferent nor numbed by God’s plan, but bears an intensity of interior alertness, reminiscent of the bride in Song of Songs, “I am asleep, but my heart watcheth.” So too Seven Sisters learn this from the Madonna of the Grapes. We bear a responsibility to our personal Eucharistic life and that in our providentially deigned circles of influence.
To the right of Mary’s shoulder, Mignard astutely renders a finial resting on the throne, as it were, of Mary – for she is Queen of heaven (ample blue cloak) and of earth (vermillion undergarment upon which the incarnate Christ leans). Initial thoughts rightly bring the first Scripture-scripted miracle, the Wedding at Cana, where the stone jars embodied water-turned-wine, the foreshadowing of holy Mass. This is impeccably suitable for the Madonna, overseer of the Eucharistic life. Do whatever He tells you guides us still. In lingering a bit longer regarding the finial, one must be brought to remembrance of the alabaster jar of the Magdalene. The recorded witness of this lavishing of love toward Jesus invigorates our Apostolate work today. Here the Seven Sister pauses to appreciate that her lavishing of prayers for one, like the extravagant decanting of perfume, fill the airs wherever they are offered. They have effect. We simply and trustingly offer; another guides their influence. Our obedience and fidelity have their reward. Oh, dearest sisters in Christ, let us allow this God-ordained image, title and patronage of Madonna of the Grapes, overseer of the Eucharistic life, to take us a bit farther into the extravagance and responsibility of the Eucharistic life, and in quietness and trust, let us go farther still.
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest. Eternal gratitude continues as you each offer a daily wee Hail Mary for me. “One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). Pray that I will not ‘spoil the beautiful work that God has entrusted…’ (St Teresa of Calcutta). Your emails, notes and calls always arrive to my heart door at the just the right moment! Financial sacrifices are for 100% furtherance of the Apostolate. Your letters of testimony are beautiful and edifying! What glory is given to God through them! Be assured of my continued daily prayers for you at the altar.

MATTERS of the HEART:
“When asked to be an Anchoress my answer was YES. The anchoress had a stroke. My sister is a Seven Sister for another priest. We keep a weekly holy hour of Adoration together.” (Helen, Ohio)
“I am a sophomore at Saint Mary’s. I grew up with my mother as Anchoress for my home parish’s pastor and admired the ways she was able to support him. I feel like it’s so easy for many of us to go to Mass but then forget about our priests. They have so many duties. Priests are also people just like us and are tempted and face the same issues. I hope to support Fr. Burns for the rest of my time at Saint Mary’s and encourage other young women to do the same!” (Joanna, Minnesota)
“The necessity to pray for priests and a sister in my church inspired me to join the Seven Sisters and lead this group for our parish priest. Group or family prayers is stronger.” (Hilda, Cameroon)
“This year’s commitment renewal was momentous. The priest for whom we pray, blessed our Seven Sisters and substitutes from the altar at the conclusion of Mass.(In the past we have had a “private” blessing after Mass.) As a result, two wonderful ladies from the congregation approached me to inquireabout “Seven Sisters”. I am so grateful that the word is spreading.” (Nancy, Maryland)
“I approached 8 women and 6 immediately agreed. Our Pastor is very pleased we are forming the group. I pray the Holy Spirit will be with us and guide us as we begin.” (Sharon, Illinois)
“I have worked in ministry for the last ten years with the great blessing to work alongside many priests. Currently, I work at a seminary and volunteer at my parish. I see the great joys and sufferings that happen in the life of the priest and I feel called to accompany through prayer.” (Cassie, Indiana)

SPANISH translation of Communique: Posted (and archived) on the Website. The translation link is sent with every Communique. Commitment Prayer/Guidelines Booklet in Spanish (on the Website – free download)
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ – Although perhaps unnoticed by visitors because of its altitude, the stunning granite façade of the Cathedral of St Paul (St Paul, Minnesota) bears a compelling dual invitationof love through Our Lord’s arms, extended in both welcome and commission. Those ample arms seem to beckon those passing by to enter the house of God, “Come forth – and after your visit with Me, Go forth!”
A verbalized benefit by some Seven Sisters is that aside from gathering with your group for an initial, then annual, Commitment prayer, there are no meetings. Drawing the veil to the side just a wee bit, though, one finds that inthis Apostolate of “no meetings”, our work is ironically “full of meetings”!
Our spiritual history and heritage richly reveal a God whose love enflames Him to draw near to His created ones. Sacred Scripture preserves images of God routinely walking in the Garden with mankind’s first parents. He meets Abraham repeatedly at the Tent of Meeting, Moses in the blazes of a bush and leans in enough toward every prophet to impart detailed messages. Over the arc of time, countless angelic messengers arrive for impromptu meetings. The earthly life of Jesus discloses His constant union with God the Father, seeking His Will and Way, and in so doing, effecting His earthly encounters. Following, the life of the Holy Spirit literally bursts forth as flame to accompany the nascent Church and the Church now. God comes to meet us in a myriad of ways: past, present, future. His encounters foremost bear His love, and His plans and purposes to live deeper in that love.
Many Seven Sisters have expressed the perception of a lingering and growing innercall to intercession for priests. This is initiated by a closeness of God, a Heart-to-heart meeting. He rouses His love and plan to stretch each heart to greater generosity. How sweet that the Lord sometimes uses another to open the door toward growth of that call. Seven Sisters might have sincerely said, or heard it said, in the excitement of discovering the Apostolate work and in the readiness to begin …when can I go and meet with God? (Ps 42:2b). Our recurrent Hours of offering satisfy, for we meet with Our Lord in His real Presence. Love and faithfulness meet together (Ps 85: 10a). And there are more meetings going on in each Hour! We meet on behalf of another, for the good of another, seeking the Will and Way of God for another, carrying that one to the meeting place in the Heart of God. Oh, Lord, I bring my Brother in Christ to You that You may meet him in all of his needs. In so doing, our hearts seek, listen and meet with the Heart of the Lord to guide our thoughts and prayers. Our Holy Hours are united with others in our prayer efforts. The Sacrament of Unity mystically unites the other intercessors in our prayer group. We meet at the altars. We meet at the Tabernacles. Sometimes we meet for lunch with our sisters. Where two or three have gathered together in My Name, I am there in their midst (Mt 18:20).
Fidelity to our committed Hours release us into a continuation of our day or evening with something more. Every encounter with Christ impacts us. How life-giving is the Come forth and Go forth rhythm of God’s directives and work. He calls us to meet with Him that we might move from that meeting with more – more humility, more trust, more contrition, more understanding, more meditation, more hope, more love, more like Him.
And as if all this reflecting about meetings within our Apostolate without meetings is not enough, has it ever been considered that the monthly Communiqués are meetings of sorts too?! And what a meeting it is! One that can be attended fitting one’s own schedule: early before the household awakens or after the day has quieted. It can be listened to via audio recording while attending to chores or resting with a cup of tea. Each Communiqué offers a fresh Reflection to rekindle and enliven one’s faithfulness to prayers, fortify ways of the Faith and/or go deeper in knowledge of the priesthood. Each monthly “meeting” includes new testimonies from fellow sisters, priests and/or Fasting Brothers. Particulars are repeatedly available regarding joining the fruitful work of the Apostolate through Fasting Brothers, Elijah’s Helpers, the Appreciated and Loved Quilt Project, the Lamp Bearers daily prayer group (and another fruit to be announced next month!). Where groups have sprung up and where eventsare taking place is part of the monthly meeting too! Every few months Freebies are offered. The stack of SASEs that arrive those months is testimony that attendance to the monthly meeting through the Communique is high! If the classic Word document or pdf is printed, each issue is exactly 4 single sheets or 2 sheets, double sided. Some have printed and put them in a shared Adoration Chapel and/or mailed to homebound members, those without computer access or simply prefer hard copies. It is not quite a “meeting on a stick” as at the state fairs, but certainly one do-able in 20 minutes of time!
The Cathedral of St Paul façade touchingly reminds of that individual and collective call to Seven Sisters to join Our Lord in His unceasing intercession for His brother priests. That Come forth to his invitation has launched us to Go forth to many parts of our towns, cities, Dioceses, Archdioceses, states, countries and world. May this image be received as my heartfelt invitation to visit the Cathedral of St Paul to personally contemplate this breathtaking stone frieze. If you accept, contact me, and if at all possible, we will honor it together and visit the sacred Chapel where the spark of Seven Sisters began. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Heb 10:25).

“I was introduced into the group by Sr. Theresa Itor. We talked and I felt a longing in my heart to pray for the Bishop whom I knew as a child of about 6 years old. I watched him grow into a fine young man, then a priest and now a bishop. He is a bishop in an area bereft in a terrible crisis with lots of killings and kidnapping. So many priests have been killed, shot at, and kidnapped. The Bishop was so overburdened and I needed to join the Seven Sisters to help pray for His mission.” (Aurelia, Cameroon)
“We (my 7 sisters and I) are growing so much in our Faith due to this ministry. We are still all in for year #3! God bless in all this Apostolate is!” (Barbara, Massachusetts)
“I was approached by a current Sister to attend a gathering of the Seven Sisters. I was so touched by the information given, I felt I needed to join. This is so needed.” (Linda, New Mexico)
“God the Father sent the Son; the Father, in the Son’s name, sent the Holy Spirit who sent all of the Church to go out and bear fruit that will last. Every one of us hopes to bear lasting fruit but imagine our priests’ vital role in guiding us and providing the blessed sacraments. Our Holy Hour as Seven Sisters is essential for us and for our priests’ bearing of eternal fruit. We can all be “winners”! Praise God for this Apostolate.” (Corrine, Iowa)
“When in Medjugorje, I was inspired by a newly ordained priest and a few of his Seven Sisters accompanying on his pilgrimage. Am hoping to help grow this in our diocese.” (Colleen, Ohio)
“I have recently had a career change, which allows me more time to spend in prayer. My mom is a member in another group and her faith has inspired me.” (Jilliane, Nebraska)
“I am a lifelong Catholic always searching to increase my faith life, learn and share with others. After I was asked to be an Anchoress, a nudge from the Holy Spirit came to accept. Six names came to me in time of prayer. We are all thrilled to be part of this beautiful ministry.” (Lois, New York)
“The world is topsy-turvy. We really need our Priests to bring us closer to Jesus. Praying that we keep our Priests safe. I had an uncle who was a Priest, overseas, and was killed.” (Charlotte, Texas)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ – Whoosh! Prepare for a flood! Whether in attendance in person, participating at a distance through media, or unaware, the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis in mid-July will have its influence. All of us exist in the torrential ripple-effect of its graces. Yes, even our dear Sisters in the 32 countries outside of the USA. Our Eucharistic Lord seeks every heart. How fitting that the Church orients herself in August to the themes of the Blessed Sacrament and Adoration. Seven Sisters will receive an extra boost of love and strength from our patron, St John Vianney (Feast Day, 4 August).
A growing number of Seven Sisters articulate that they carry an invigorating desire to encourage others to join our efforts. This seems fueled by a genuine desire that every priest/bishop benefits from our sacrifices of prayer. Blessed the men whose strength is in Thee… They go from strength to strength (Psalm 84: 5a, 7a). This current gift of a swell of graces round about us serves as a perfect milieu and moment to individually and collectively do just that. The reality of being alongside Jesus in our efforts is the starting point. For Christ’s love compels us (II Cor 5:14). He guides, we follow. He calls, we harvest. Our conversations with Him prior, during and in the yielding of the fruit of the labors is key to moving closer to completion of our mission that “our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest”. There are some 400,000 waiting for a Seven Sisters group! It is do-able! (Please quote me!)
At the heart of our Work, we imitate Christ who invites: “Can you not watch with Me one Hour? and followed by other invitations, “Come and See” and “Follow me”. Regardless of how conversations may tumble out between individuals, this is at the center. We invite in reciprocation of His invitation to us. We pray in imitation of His continual conversation with Our Father. The first year of our prayer with 7 groups of 7 (June 2011-June 2012) was a testing of the spirits. As the door opened in June of 2012 for others to participate, Fr Johnson (Apostolate Chaplain), in prudence, requested that one-on-one invitation be the means for potential growth. This would fittingly rely on and witness to the workings of the Holy Spirit. These simple efforts swiftly revealed that the harvest was all about us. Father eventually gave the go-ahead to use Bulletin spots, radio conversations, news articles, Informational booths/sessions and the like. He continues to remind that the work remains that of the Holy Spirit, giving credit to the nudging to move in any one of these directions as heaven-sent.
The varied sectors served by our priests/bishops call for distinctive out-reach efforts. Bulletin inserts may bear fruit for some situations, while a parish flock-note, Diocesan paper article or radio spot may be better elsewhere. “You know your people” and how they might respond to various ways of invitation. Prayer will make it clear. Action will carry it out, but be mindful that action lives next door to inactivity, and doubt next door to faith. Trust it. Try it. “When you pray, move your feet” (African origin). And above all, your prayerful fidelity and example will draw interest surer than words.
What brings fruit one time may not do so a second time. Perhaps we can learn from an esthetician who uses the technique of skin flooding. It involves layering of skin creams, sprays, oils and serums. She is not “hoping something works” but rather knowing they all work together for good. The Apostolate offers handouts to assist with conversation starters, Bulletin blurbs and setting up an Informational booth/table. Attached here on the Website. Let us be a resource – but let us learn from you too! Share what you are doing (in prayer and in deed) to ensure more prayer for more priests.
As Christians we hope to spend our lives for something that will outlast our time on earth. Renowned Filipino artist, Anita Magsaysay Ho, regarded the women of her country with deep admiration for their “joy of living… knowing very well their strength, hard work and quiet dignity”. Her painting here says all of this. Anita, a Catholic, offered this ending to a poem she once penned: “I gaze at my drab colours and at the grandeur that is Thine; Lord, how can I depict Thy work, without Thy hand in mine?” These touching words and image aptly reflect so much of you and the Apostolate work, as well.
A moving passage of sacred Scripture is held in a prophecy from Ezekiel (17:2-24). It stirs both a reminder and assurance that God has a plan that beckons our cooperation, not our direction. Ezekiel states that He will take from the cedar a tender shoot and plant it elsewhere – on a high and lofty mountain. And the growth and fruit will be tremendous – not because of the shoot, but because of God and His choosing. And so does it seem with this Apostolate that we share. Of His choosing God has placed tender shoots of handfuls of hidden, trusting intercessors and is flourishing them … and it is generating shelter and strength for many. Graces are now in abundance fit to nurture Eucharistic lives. Let us not squander them, but allow them to stretch our hearts! Next year the Jubilee Year will afford even more! They are for our asking and cooperation. Let us together move in strength, hard work and dignity and let us know that: “God will help us. The work is His” (St Jeanne Jugan).
United in prayer and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest…. eternal gratitude continues as you each remember to offer a wee Hail Mary for me every day.… “One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). MATTERS of the HEART:
“I am a student at KSU. Throughout college I have experienced a great increase in my devotion to the Lord. This is nurtured by the amazing priests here. I heard about the group from an anchoress, and I knew that it was a call to serve the priests that do so much for us college students.” (Maria, Kansas)
“Someone that leads a Seven Sister group approached me. I was honored she asked. I said yes right away. Father is new to our parish. What a wonderful way to welcome him: in prayer!” (Carla, Iowa)
“This Apostolate is an integral step in saving our church, our community and our families. Heaven’s gates can open a little wider because people will be able to hear the truth. God’s truth. (This has) given us a chance to make a difference – one prayer at a time …” (Cheryl, Alabama)
“I began as a member of the Apostolate in South Carolina. I have had a strong calling to pray for priests from my youth, so I was glad to have this avenue to put that desire to use. It was difficult to move from my church and truly treasured priests this year, but have landed on “good soil”. I was excited to learn of a Seven Sisters group here, so I reached out to the Anchoress. My call was a relief for her. Two parochial vicars joined the staff recently, and they needed not only new members, but a new Anchoress as well. The calling couldn’t be clearer, so I agreed to fill the role.” (Caitlin, Tennessee)
“Someone handed out brochures at an event. A friend decided to do it. I figured if she could start it, then I could, too. Our priests are struggling so much having to be in charge of more than one parish and also not living with other priests. God really led me to ask the right people.” (Dianne, New York)
“I look forward to my new position (Anchoress) and the spiritual growth that no doubt will accompany it. The opportunity came at the right time. Great thanks to the Holy Spirit!” (Megan, Virginia)
“Such a beautiful ministry to help support our priests, our parishes, the entire Catholic Church, ourselves and the greater world. Thank you and I pray it continues to grow.” (Maureen, Wisconsin)
“This time in prayer has been invaluable. Although we may not see the fruit, we are confident that God knows our hearts and is showering graces. We are each connected spiritually in a very particular way bringing glory to God. Gratitude for this apostolate and divine mercy is beyond what any words can ever express. My own spiritual life has grown through this self-giving offering, and I can more easily ‘see’ how God uses us in our weaknesses, limitations, and surrendering to His call.” (Anne Marie, Ohio)
“I saw information about this in our Bulletin and reached out for more info. I decided to lead the group so it could get started. This is a beautiful apostolate and I am blown away by the graciousness of the women who signed up! Everyone I asked said yes! Thank you, Holy Spirit!!” (Jenny, Idaho)

Perhaps a novena of Holy Hours or the offering of holy Mass(es) for the priest. You will know. Some groups have/are offering Holy Hours for an entire year for their beloved deceased priest. Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ – If you are reading this, you have recently prayerfully bound yourself for either the first time, or for another year, to regularly pray for one priest/bishop. Heaven and earth applaud you. This is no small thing! Nothing given to God remains small. History reminds what the Lord does with loaves and fish and when a toe is dipped in the water and when a peasant girl says “yes”. In wisdom and joy let us surrender even now all of our anticipated Holy Hours to God’s Providence and together see what He will do!
I vividly remember leaning against my mother’s knee as a little one, asking for prayer. While a usual occurrence, one afternoon Mom’s response was new: “I will pray with you.” That maternal whisper awakened within a newfound confidence that God would listen to me too. My fledgling perspective affirmed that my mother was the quintessential intercessor, but she pointedly called that forth in me. That moment and those that followed – now long into years – fostered something that remains important. As Christians, we are in this together!
Our dedicated prayers as Seven Sisters bind us as family. Sisters in Christ. One heart of prayer. Acts 1:14 is living and active to us: “All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.” Our loyalty to prayer brings us before the Sacrament of Unity, where our Lord’s influence is paramount. Sometimes written prayers of the holy ones – in heaven or on earth – bolster both our prayers and us. Images and sacramentals have an effect. Even silence serves. Acts 1:14 points to something additional. Our unity, our one accord, can be fortified as we actively pray together. The united actions of Jesus, Mary and our fellow Seven Sisters intercessors knowingly impact our Holy Hours. What about our priestly brothers in Christ? Are we praying only for them – or with them too?!
Priests and bishops pray. What, when, where and how certainly varies, yet these men in Christ do share common prayers. All clergy are obliged to daily pray the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours). This ancient meditative prayer of the Church marks the hours of each day with a rhythm of prayer. Knowing this is a “given” in the day of a priest/bishop can serve as a way of praying alongside. On your designated Apostolate day, pray or review the LOH prayers. Something there may strike you to bring deeper into prayer, beseeching graces for the good of your priestly prayer recipient, who is offering those very same prayers. Reviewing the LOH prayer for this purpose might have the effect of nurturing your own discipline to desire to pray the Hours. Now that would truly be “coming alongside” in prayer!
Priests and bishops offerholy Mass. This highest form of prayer of our Faith is brimming with prayer excerpts to “echo” on behalf of a priest/bishop. Slowly and meditatively review the prayers of the Mass as if learning of it for the first time. Prepare to pause at the places where the presider alone offers particular prayers. Wrap these in special intercession for the priest/bishop to comprehend these prayers more personally, intensely, sincerely. Appreciate the value of the Eucharistic Prayers (I-IV) and how they can serve to impact the one repeatedly uttering them. The words of institution are the most astounding prayers proclaimed on the planet. Imploring a more perfected identification with these words might be how you are led in prayer for a priest/bishop. Through Him and With Him and In Him. This is the presider’s declaration of adoration, fidelity and perfect kinship with Jesus. What a solid, gripping prayer to resound for the priest/bishop for whom you pray. Every Mass contains the Lord’s Prayer. Imploring each word and promise for the life of the priest/bishop could fittingly satiate a full Holy Hour. It is the prayer taught to us by Christ Himself and contained in the living words of Scripture, which thus hold the promise that they will not return void! Considering the final blessing of holy Mass, the words of the saintly bishop, St Francis de Sales, give insight: “At the blessing, we should think that Jesus Christ is at that moment giving us His own blessing.” How suitable to pray that the priest/bishop becomes more fully mindful of this commission at each Mass.
The gamut for the prayer occupations of our priests/bishops is profoundly wide and deep. In addition to the Divine Office and holy Mass, consider the scores of prayers linked with offering the Sacraments, blessings of every sort, Holy Hours, Rosaries, devotional reading, the constant cascade of intercessory prayer requests. The life of the priest/bishop is a full life of prayer. Perhaps as they lean against the knee of Mother Church asking for prayer, a sure whisper meets them, reminding them that Seven Sisters earnestly devote themselves to pray for them and pray with them. For truly, we are in one accord with Jesus, Mary, our sisters and our brothers. We are in this together!
United in prayer, fasting and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest.… eternal gratitude continues as you each remember to offer a wee Hail Mary for me every day….“One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). Pray that I will not ‘spoil the beautiful work that God has entrusted…’ (St Teresa of Calcutta) … your kind emails and notes and phone calls and generous support always arrive to my heart door at the right moment! Your financial sacrifices are for 100% furtherance of Apostolate. THANK YOU! The letters of testimony are so beautiful and edifying! What glory is given to God through your writing! Eternal gratitude is mine for YOU! Be assured of my continued daily prayers for you at the altar.

MATTERS of the HEART:
“Peggy was a beautiful woman of faith. She texted me while in the hospital to ask if she could offer her holy hour from her hospital room. I assured her she could. A short week later our Lord called Peggy home to Himself. Her family mentioned in her eulogy how important Seven Sisters was in their wife/mother’s life.” Eternal rest grant unto Peggy, O Lord… (Beth (Anchoress), Georgia)
“There have been and are so many graces for the Church, her priests, and for the Sisters praying. May God continue to bless this beautiful Apostolate. Know of my prayers.” (Joan, Minnesota)
“I have a lot of respect for my priests and seeing the way they work with so much difficulties. I said to myself only prayers can help them achieve the mission assigned to them. With the Seven Sisters Apostolate it is a very unique opportunity to do so. Thank you!” (Ayamba, Cameroon, Africa)
“This experience has been so fruitful and a complete blessing to our Pastor. In our parish the Apostolate has really become a ministry of prayer and sisterhood. My husband took up the mantle of leading Fasting Brothers and has 16 men fasting with 3 more currently discerning.” (Nellie, Ohio)
“I heard about the Seven Sisters while at bible study. I fell in love with the idea of praying for our priest and asked to join. Such a beautiful group of women. I am proud to be a sister.” (Maureen, Florida)
“I don’t normally watch TV, especially mid-day, but there was Jim and Joy (EWTN) talking with Janette. This touched my heart because I have many friends that get very upset about the state of the world. Seven Sisters gives me something tangible to pray for to make a difference.” (Cheryl, Alabama)
“I am a retired preschool teacher so when Father shared his concern about retirement I identified with those feelings. It wasn’t difficult to find others with the same thought.” (Linda, Indiana)
“I was on retreat last weekend and someone started telling me about Seven Sisters Apostolate. I was hooked. This is exactly what I was looking for.” (Patricia, Illinois)
“Prayers for the leaders of our church are vital, always and until Jesus returns. Our pastor oversees a cluster of parishes and is often overwhelmed, as many of our priests today. We must do this. In our quiet way, we are flooding heaven with prayers. Our Lord in His goodness hears and responds. I cannot go through this life without a priest giving me the gift of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We must do this. So, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray! (Mary, Montana)

__________________________
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we enter this month wholly dedicated to the Sacred HeartofJesus. We might say, and rightly so, that this is “our month”. Our roots lie here. Our annual renewal is rekindled and invigorated here. Our commitments, now echoing across the globe, are mystically united by the Sacred Heart Itself! Yes, Love Himself tutors us and challenges us toward an impassioned generosity of prayer offerings for priests and bishops. This month is aflame with graces to strengthen our call as Seven Sisters!
Depictions of the Sacred Heart often show licks of flames at the top. Some, as in this vintage engraving, encircle the entire heart. St Margaret Mary Alacoque (17th c) received this now-familiar symbolism through a private revelation. Jesus specifically mentions flames: “My Divine Heart is so inflamed with love for men, and for you in particular, that, being unable any longer to contain within Itself the flames of Its burning Charity, It must spread them abroad…” Seven Sisters imitate Christ in a burning heart of love for priests/bishops. A growing number, also in imitation of Christ, seem compelled to “spread abroad like fire” this work of love within the Apostolate.
Our Lord’s intense Love indeed comes to meet us, desiring to exchange our limiting, stony hearts for His unsparing, burning-with-love Heart. This is not the first time God associates Himself with fire. Sacred Scripture connects fire with the essence of divinity. Consider that God revealed His Name to Moses in the midst of a burning bush, a bush that although on fire, was not consumed. Some theologians link this to the Incarnation, where God assumes human nature without His divinity destroying the humanity. Scripture also discloses God as guiding the Israelites in the daytime via a column of cloud and at night by a column of fire. We learn too of flames raining down from heaven that consumed the sacrifice of Elijah, who later rises heavenward in a divinely-fiery chariot. In the New Testament, Jesus reveals His Heart to a great crowd gathered, “I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled” (Luke 12:49). After Christ’s earthly departure, the Holy Spirit emerges at Pentecost as tongues of fire (Acts 2:3). Fire, fire, fire! While some symbols and even Scripture-given titles express one person of the Trinity more than another, fire expresses them all! Christ’s heart of flaming love can serve to deepen our Trinitarian life and Trinitarian love.
Devotionto the Sacred Heart unfailingly leads us to the Eucharist. Love for the Eucharist leads us to God’s infinite Love depicted by the Sacred Heart. This seems God’s brilliant course for us in this Apostolate. Love Himself calls us and shows us how to broaden our love. Seven Sisters beseech Love for the other from the Other! In our Holy Hours we encounter Christ, the one for whom we pray, and each other in that Heart ablaze with love. Fire enkindles fire. Our prayers share that gift of “fire” with those the Lord has given us to love. Every sacrament is an effect of Christ’s love, but as St. Bernard reminds, the Blessed Sacrament is the love of loves, the amor amorum – Jesus gives Himself as Love.
Scottish-born Fr Richard Neilsen (+2016) seems to speak directly to the heart of our call as Seven Sisters, which is inseparable with the Sacred Heart: “When devotion to the Sacred Heart is recommended, what is being recommended to us is the gift of our entire self to Jesus – soul and body, thoughts, feelings, words, actions, joys, sorrows. Jesus came to light a fire on earth. Fire purifies, gives light, communicates, unites. Such is the blaze of Divine Love devotion to the Sacred Heart enkindled in our hearts. The Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament feeds the flame of our love for the Lord, burning from us the dross of self. Thus, afire we thirst for souls as He does, becoming His dedicated emissaries among the men and women of our day, so many of whom neither know Him nor love Him.” We walk with Our Lord and we rest with Him. Let our hearts burn in both places as we together take on the mantle of prayer for our Shepherd-Brothers in Christ. “Sacred Heart of Jesus, burning with love of us, inflame our hearts with love of Thee. Amen.”
MATTERS of the HEART:
“The priest we pray for offered a private Mass for our Seven Sisters group. He personalized his opening remarks and homily: addressing us as a “bouquet of roses” in the church, and his “powerhouse” of prayer and support. Thank you for this wonderful apostolate. It is a breath of joy.” (Karen, South Carolina)
“My mom in Minnesota is part of a group there and I’ve admired what she’s shared about it, so when the opportunity presented itself here, I jumped at the chance!” (Stacey, Kansas)
“I am blessed and honored to have first heard about 7 Sisters many years ago on a Catholic podcast and discerned to get it going in our parish. Wow, the Apostolate has grown so much in the past years. God has really been anointing this effort! I remember when not all 50 states were covered.” (Nancie, Illinois)
“A little tidbit: I dressed up as St. Margaret Clitherow when I was in a Young Adult group around 2000! I made a door out of cardboard, hung it on my front, cut a portal to see and put paper ‘rocks’ atop. So, imagine my joy seeing she is a patroness of the movement! In our building projects here on the farm, I keep finding places to build priest hideouts… she’s infiltrated my way of thinking!!!!” (Jen, Minnesota)
“A friend and I were praying for a way to pray for our priest. We asked the Lord to show us. An article in our Archdiocese paper appeared about the Apostolate. I immediately emailed the contact. Then we witnessed our priests begging for prayers during their homilies. The Lord led us!” (Mary, Alabama)
“One of my closest friends told me about this Apostolate and I had a keen interest to look into it! This could be a beautiful way to support our priest and live in sisterhood.” (Brooke, Missouri)
“I heard about the Apostolate listening to “Beacon of Truth” on Spirit Catholic Radio. A caller mentioned she was in a group and the prayers were helping their priest. The idea of it “spoke to me”. The seven came together quickly! One member is having rosaries made for the seven sisters: all black beads with the first bead being white as a symbol of the priest’s collar. What an awesome idea!” (Doreen, Nebraska)

PRIEST who has PASSED to ETERNAL REST: If the priest for whom you pray has entered eternal life, the group may be led to continue to pray for a length of time for the soul of that priest. Perhaps a novena of Holy Hours or the offering of holy Mass(es) for the priest. You will know. Some groups have/are offering Holy Hours for an entire year for their beloved deceased priest. Groups may be started following the death of a priest that did not have a group prior. This is commendable and welcomed. Please register these special groups through the Web site.
SPANISH translation of Communique: Posted (and archived) on the Website. The translation link is sent with every Communique. Commitment Prayer/Guidelines Booklet in Spanish (on the Website – free download)
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we exult together, from the corners of the world, in this Eastertide, persisting all the way to the pinnacle: Pentecost (May 19). We are truly together. Distance is not a barrier, for we meet in the eternal realm – at the holy altar and before the Sacrament of Unity. And St Catherine of Sienna reminds that our steps bear eternity too: “All the way to heaven is heaven, because Jesus said, “I am the way.”
My husband and I gifted our daughter and groom with a pendulum clock for their Wedding. It is the style that needs dedicated visits to manually wind. On acid-free paper using permanent ink I penned Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 in full, and affixed to the back. For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven… Vowed to marriage, the two will enter this entire litany of life – and together learn and fall and rise and love along the way. Through it they will hope to gain the perspective of the writer of Ecclesiastes (v 11a): (God) has made everything beautiful in its time; also, he has put eternity into man’s mind…
Time and dates and seasons are important to the Church too. Liturgies start on an assigned minute. Presiders respect the order and timeliness of worship with little variance. Attendees are disquieted if either is disrupted. Parishes freely dole out annual calendars, and we Catholics tack them to our walls and heed them. They remind of Liturgical seasons, Solemnities, Memorials, Feast Days, days of fasting. Further, the Church delights in searching and archiving significant dates in her history and in the lives of the holy ones. Her wisdom teaches that events often require the passage of time to comprehend their full significance, to recognize God’s eternal Hand. The Church remembers Jesus’ words to St Peter after washing his disciples’ feet, ‘At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand’.For Catholics, the months of the year and days of the week bear traditional devotional themes, with Sunday of highest esteem. In his Apostolic Letter Dies Domini (May 1998), St JP II awakens our sensibilities about Sunday. He links this point of time to eternity: “Sunday is the proclamation that time, in which He who is the Risen Lord of history makes His home…the cradle of an ever-new future, an opportunity given to us to turn the fleeting moments of this life into seeds of eternity. Sunday is an invitation to look ahead….From Sunday to Sunday, enlightened by Christ, (the Church) goes forward towards the unending Sunday of the heavenly Jerusalem…”
In this Eastertide we seamlessly celebrate the “Sunday” resurrection triumph of Christ over death and over time. It truly takes 50 days to let such joyous truth overcome us! In all of her caretaking and precise use of time, the Church paradoxically and consistently points us to timelessness and eternity. God is outside of time altogether but invites us to a foretaste (a big gulp at times) of heaven’s timelessness in the holy Mass, Adoration, sacramental life and through the giving and receiving of acts of love, for “Love is never finished” (Benedict XVI)! This is the familiar ground and life of a Seven Sister!
Vermeer’s Woman Holding a Balance, gives a delightfulvisual study of the nearness of time and eternity. Seven Sisters can likely relate to living in the precarious balance of the depicted places here: between light and dark, between focus and fanfare, between this world and the next (painting on wall is of the Last Judgement – more apparent in full portrait versus this detail). Our call to this Apostolate, compelled by love, presents these delicate balances that bring us to the thresholds ofexperiences of eternity. The Church has always understood the holy Mass as a celebration where time collapses. We lift our hearts to the Lord. Heaven comes to earth. We literally commune with Our Lord. St Leonard of Port Maurice says it well: “Possessing this treasure of holy Mass, hope breathes again; and if we but throw it not away by our own mismanagement, we have holy paradise within our grasp.” Yes, we are women holding a balance, living within that balance. Our times of Eucharistic Adoration likewise bring us to an encounter of eternity where heaven comes to earth and eternal life rushes into this earthly life. And there is even more to ponder when we consider offering our Holy Hours. While they are offered in the grasp of time, love opens our action into eternity.
As Seven Sisters we now meet at the brink of two special months: May, our month of discernment to remain or depart from the weekly Holy Hour commitment(s); and June, our month of re-commitment to another year of prayer offerings. Be open to a call that nudges you to remain in the Apostolate, but also serve in an additional or different (ornew!) group. My prayers heartily join yours as you listen and act. When you gain that clear sense of the Lord’s direction, please inform your Anchoress.
Our experience of time is likely that there never seems to be enough of it. Yet the Lord is set to show us that He invites us and takes us outside of time with Him. Our love lives on. Let us consider again that pendulum clock or perhaps your Fitbit, cell phone or kitchen clock. Their essence seems fleeting. For those who have hearts to see, time offered in love truly touches eternity. Our Holy Hours are never finished! (God) has made everything beautiful in its time; also, he has put eternity into man’s mind…(Ecc 3:11a).

“It is a treasure of the heart to offer a Holy Hour weekly for a priest/bishop who has committed his life to follow Christ, lead Christ’s flock, and tend Christ’s sheep. Our priests/bishops not only pray for our souls but also lead us to a deeper love of Our Lord. This is a treasure we can live within here on earth and take with us to Heaven. I am blessed to be a member of Seven Sisters Apostolate.” (Barb, Missouri)
Thank you for your beautiful communiques each month. I find that is a way to connect with the Sisters when we don’t cross paths often otherwise. They are so thoughtfully written and always full of ideas for us. The Apostolate has been a blessing to us as well as our pastor.” (Malise, Texas)
“For about 3 years was discerning how to respond to the Lord’s inspiration to pray for priests. A sister-in-law explained Seven Sisters Apostolate. I knew that was it! In no time we had 21 sisters praying for the Pastor and two parochial vicars. Praise God! Such a Spirit led apostolate!” (Jean, Massachusetts)
“Was asked to be a sub for a Seven Sisters group in March 2023. I gladly accepted. Last Fall, was asked to be a member of a new group starting for another priest. Again, I gladly accepted. In talking to friends in my parish about this ministry, numerous friends expressed their desire to begin a Seven Sisters group for our parish priest. I told them I would be happy to facilitate.” (Beverly, Wisconsin)
“I have a strong faith and know how important it is to Our Lady that we pray for our priests. If I can help obtain daily prayers for priests, it would be an extremely special commitment!” (Cathy, Colorado)
“I am a retired Executive Director of a homeless shelter. I have worked with marginalized populations for decades, and witnessed the human condition at its lowest point. I believe more people need to develop a relationship with Jesus to mitigate their suffering. Our priests need our support as I believe they are in a constant battle to save souls.” (Gwen, Wisconsin)
