Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we herald a new liturgical calendar. In Advent, we are challenged to balance remembrance of Christ’s first coming and anticipation of His second. The promises, fulfilled and yet-to-be fulfilled, are related and one gains from bearing both simultaneously.
The Church’s wisdom invites and draws us into greater understanding and love of God and His Ways not only through liturgical seasons, but through invitations into the awareness of His presence in the days within the seasons and further still, into the moments within the days. A message consistently resounds in each: All is gift. All is grace. This truth is worthy of some thought.
For Seven Sisters, there is a growing awareness as we consider that initial gift given to each of us: desire to pray for another. Firm or vacillating, the desire to offer Holy Hours for a priest or bishop had its origin in God’s desires. Many Seven Sisters intimate this when they share: I sensed God had prepared me for this… I was called to this prayer. … It was as if I was waiting for someone to invite me into this work. … Our testimony is St John the Baptist’s testimony, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven” (John 3:27). A deep and abiding freedom and insight comes to us when we embrace the grace of detachment from any of this being our own idea. How readily can our Lord then multiply the gifts of intercession, compassion, hope, love and the like, that He entrusts to our care and use. In Mironov’s Parable of Talents a compelling reflective mood is evident in the young man. He seems to be brooding about what to do with the two talents given. Many Seven Sisters have initially verbalized what the painting portrays. How can I pray a full hour for one person? What if I am unable to keep this commitment? Maybe this is actually meant for someone else? The portrait carries some of this reticence and hesitancy in the flushed and sullen facial features and focus on the talents that cannot speak. The flickering flame securely grasped to illumine the coins, could be seen as symbolic of the ever-near graces and guidance of God, inspiring the youth toward fitting and fruitful actions. Scripture informs, we know, that the servant used this entrustment well and even to doubling for its return to the master. And so, it is for us, as well! But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift (Eph 4:7). What God gives, what He stirs in our hearts, evident and hidden, is His invitation to join Him, to cooperate in the gift of graces in abundance and certain guidance along the way. For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable (Rom 11:29).
Our invitation to watch one Hour with the Lord, to come into His Presence, is a gift that keeps on giving. A response to a call, to be sure, it is also a noteworthy gift toward nurturing something fundamental within ourselves as women. Carmelite nun and philosopher, St Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein) explains (bolds added): “To have divine love as its inner form, a woman’s life must be a Eucharistic life. Only in daily confidential relationship with the Lord… can one forget self and become free of all one’s ownwishes and pretensions, and have a heart open to all the needs and wants of others. Whoeverseeks to consult with the Eucharistic God in all her concerns …cannot but be drawn ever more deeply and powerfully into the flow of divine life… her heart converted to the likeness of the divine heart (Essays on Woman, 1996, #56). Our fidelity to the Apostolate’s Eucharistic work is fortifying our womanly God-ordained nature and gifts, and opening us to more conversion. St Theresa Benedicta continues: “It is most important that the Holy Eucharist become life’s focal point: that the Eucharistic Savior is the center of existence; that every day is received from His hand and laid back therein; that the day’s happenings are deliberated with Him. In this way, God is given the best opportunity to be heard in the heart, to form the soul” (#125). Here St Theresa Benedicta astutely punctuates the reality that all comes from God. All is gift. All is gift to be returned for His purposes and His plan.
Fidelity to the weekly Holy Hours brings the gift of a radiant witness to this touch of the divine in us! The prayer offerings for the priests/bishops for whom we commit to pray are undeniably influenced. Our listening is sharper. The personal joy and freedom increasingly experienced are increasingly desired for the recipient of your prayers, as well. We receive, we give. Those to whom we give, receive and they in turn give. “Life with the Eucharistic Savior induces the soul to be lifted out of narrowness of its individual personal orbit. The concerns of the Lord and His kingdom become the soul’s concerns” (St Theresa Benedicta, Essays on Woman, #125). What conduits of God’s life we are meant to be! This is His way of multiplication of His gifts in us, working all things for good, as He has said. But when there are times where we wonder if the good will truly come about, our saintly friend, St Theresa Benedicta, offers sage counsel: “And when night comes, and you look back over the day and see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God’s hands and leave it with Him.” Because, after all: All is gift. All is grace.
United in prayer and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest.… eternal gratitude continues as you each remember to offer a wee Hail Mary for me every day….“One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). Pray that I will not ‘spoil the beautiful work that God has entrusted…’ (St Teresa of Calcutta) … your kind emails and notes and phone calls and generous support always arrive to my heart door at the right moment! Your financial sacrifices are for 100% furtherance of Apostolate. THANK YOU! The letters of testimony are so beautiful and edifying! What glory is given to God through your writing! Eternal gratitude is mine for YOU! Be assured of my continued daily prayers for you at the altar.

MATTERS of the HEART:
“With the recent difficulties in our Parish and the efforts of our Priests, only prayers can assist them to overcome the challenges they face. Their prayers alone are not enough. All Christians have to get involved to see that things go well.” (Ngong, Cameroon, Africa)
“We moved here four years ago in an act of obedience to the Lord, as He made it clear it was a mission field. It is extremely secular (yoga and the mountains are the primary “religion”). Fr. M is the first priest in 20 years sent to this tiny parish. He moved here shortly after we did. The parish is thriving and growing under his care but is now under attack. Priests at a Seminary shared with me the power of the Seven Sisters who were praying for them. This stirred in me a burning need to rally a group for our priest.” (Katrina, Colorado)
“How beautiful it is to see this Apostolate spread like wildfire. One day may every priest have Seven Sisters praying for them.” (Rene, North Carolina)
“It has been an effort to align my Tuesdays for 7 Sisters Adoration. Because of travel, babysitting, illness and/or company I have to actively plan or it wouldn’t happen. Despite this trouble to keep my holy hour a priority, I feel so enriched and grateful for this experience of the time spent for our pastor. It can many times be my best hour of the week. This special holy hour is carried into other days of the week and my regular prayer life – I now pray for Father in many other circumstances throughout the week. My desire to remain a Seven Sister is solid. I am so well supported by my Sisters who will take my hour when I cannot or trade days. This Apostolate has been a blessing and a grace in all areas of my life.” (Carolee, South Dakota)
“I have learned how powerful prayer is over the course of my life and recently have begun to fully understand the importance of intercessory prayer. This is what led me to be a part of Seven Sisters. It is an important vocation to support our priests through prayer and why I chose to be a part of this.” (Cynthia, Colorado)
“I told my husband about this apostolate and he agreed it would be a beautiful way to support our priest. The very next morning, a daily devotional email arrived. The last part said this: “I will offer myself to collaborate in a parish ministry or other Catholic apostolate out of the love for the Church.” That was God’s crystal-clear message to me in perfect timing, and has motivated me to do this as soon as possible! I admire and care for our priest, and I want to support him.” (Sharon, Indiana)
“I am lab Scientist by profession. With the recent happenings in the Church and numerous challenges faced by our Priests, there is urgent need to pray for them. This Apostolate gives us a good if not perfect way to assist our Priests with prayers.” (Asonganyi , Cameroon)

Groups may be started following the death of a priest that did not have a group prior. This is commendable and welcomed. Please register these special groups through the Web site.
Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ iin this grace-filled month dedicated to beseeching the generous mercy of God for those who have entered eternal life in friendship with Him, yet remain in a process of purification. His mercy is tender and unremitting!
From its inception the Church set herself apart in the way she honors the dead. Both written and oral traditions guide. History, then and now, notes that, regarding this perspective, skeptical onlookers keep at a distance from the Church or some within even depart. Another teaching too difficult to understand. The example and words of Christ give model for us on how to respond with His merciful love. The seven Corporal works of mercy include “burying the dead”. The seven Spiritual works of mercy include “praying for the living and the dead”. Funerals and procuring Mass offerings for the departed give us the opportunity to grieve, extend support and pray for the living and the dead in hope. In so doing we example to the world our indisputable respect for both the God-imaged human body and the soul, both meant for union with God for eternity.
The Apostolate respects and desires to remember those Seven Sisters in name and in prayer, who have gone before us to their eternal rest. (See the Remembrance Page on the Website) A Day of Remembrance has now been designated for the deceased Seven Sisters and deceased priests for whom we have prayed. November 7th has been fittingly chosen. This date will always be within the Octave of All Saints Day which carries exceptional graces. Therein the Church deigns that one can gain a plenary indulgence visiting a cemetery each day between November 1 and November 8 and praying for the departed. These indulgences are applicable to one Soul in Purgatory each day. The usual plenary indulgence conditions apply: receiving Communion, going to Confession within 20 days, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father – all while detached from sin. All Souls Day (Nov 2) is highlighted within the Octave. We are encouraged to visit a Church or Oratory: A plenary indulgence, again applicable only for the Souls in Purgatory, is also granted when the faithful piously visit a church or a public oratory on Nov 2. In visiting the church or oratory, it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited. Praying during the Apostolate Day of Remembrance, though optional, is encouraged; and prayer for our brothers and sisters is not limited to this day only.
Here are some other ways to remember our departed Seven Sisters and priests/bishops:
> Mass offerings for their eternal repose: in November, the anniversary of their entrance into eternal life, through a series of Masses, or perhaps arranging for Gregorian Masses (30 consecutive Masses).
> Divine Mercy Chaplets
> Offer the graces of your Holy Communion for a particular soul.
> Routinely remain in prayer after Mass to expressly pray for departed souls.
> Designate rosaries for the souls in purgatory.
> Almsgiving with the expressed intention of helping the souls in purgatory. “Not weeping, but by prayer and alms-giving are the dead relieved” (St John Chrysostom).
> When passing by a cemetery, pray the Eternal Rest prayer – or link to your prayers before/after meals. This prayer carries a partial indulgence applicable to the holy souls and is an easy habit to set.
> Check out this excellent film: Purgatory, The Forgotten Church written and directed by Franciscan Friar John Clote (His newest release is The Miracle Box about confession – also excellent).
> St Gertrude expressed to Jesus her deep desire to pray for the deceased. In return He taught her the following prayer. It is piously believed that 1,000 souls are released from purgatory by praying this prayer with the heart: Eternal Father, I offer You the most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for all sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family.
In their time on earth the Seven Sisters and priests that have now gone before us, offered sacrifices and prayers for so many, so often – many of us included. Let us not forget them. And let us also be confident that many, to be sure, are already actively praying for us now from the heavenlies and helping us to be generous in our prayers to increase their numbers in heaven! Such is the beauty of the Communion of Saints! Death does not separate those bonded to one another in Christ.
For those in Purgatory, there is great joy as well as great agony, for the souls know for certain they are bound for heaven. St Catherine of Genoa wrote of the “flame of love” in purgatory eradicating what she termed “the rust and stain of sins” yet also filling souls there with an intense yearning for God’s eternal embrace. Yet, they cannot pray for themselves. Thus, they covet our prayers. Jesus said to St. Faustina, “Enter into purgatory often, because [the souls] need you there” (1738). Let us together be stirred to diligently pray for our departed sisters and brothers. Let us together empty Purgatory!
United in prayer and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest…. eternal gratitude continues as you each remember to offer a wee Hail Mary for me every day.… “One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). MATTERS of the HEART:
“Being the Anchoress for our group has been an honor and grace that only God knew how this was going to change my heart and devotion. It has moved me to be in closer with our priest and changed things in our home, as well. May the Lord continue to add many more sisters on the world map.” (Ana, Minnesota)
“I am a nurse. Father was diagnosed with lung cancer. God has been very gracious and merciful and helping us to obtain and provide the medical care and health that Father needs, while the Seven Sisters continue to pray for him, his health, his ministry.” (Mary, Ohio)
“I am grateful and honored to be the Anchoress for the Seven Sisters Apostolate. When I reflect back to all the situations that had occurred in my life, I have realized that God has given and continue giving my family and I tremendous amounts of blessings and grace. Therefore, as a way of giving thanks to our Lord and giving back to society, I volunteer – like for the Seven Sisters. I love it!” (Hien, Georgia)
“Fr M is the embodiment and true representative of Christ here on earth. He is an inspiration and a blessing. He will be reassigned from the US to his home country of Poland. He goes with our gift of prayer.” (Joetta)
“These last few weeks I have been overloaded with life and I told myself, “Just say no to the next request.” I was approached about Seven Sisters. When I heard the requirements one hour, one year, one priest, find six other sisters, the pressure was extremely short lived. I felt this instant “There is a need!” and finding six other busy sisters in Christ was God- led!” (Lori, New York)
“We love our parish priest & know he needs our prayers and so I got on-line & checked you out! I was able to secure Seven Ladies & I ordered the booklets & we have been praying faithfully, our days of the week, ever since! We have noticed Father’s powerful homilies and confidence in preaching the Gospel! What a beautiful Apostolate! Thank you.” (Kathy, Minnesota)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ in this month bursting with celebration of so many saintly brothers and sisters known for their abiding Eucharistic love and life. October honors St Thérèse of Lisieux, St Francis of Assisi, St Faustina, St Bruno, St John XXIII, St JP II, St Margaret Mary, St Ignatius of Antioch, St Anthony Claret, the North American martyrs – naming only a few! The streams of their steadfast prayer prompt us to be more fully united through Eucharistic love as one family. They imitate Christ Himself, as should we, who prays that we may be brought to complete unity… (John 17:23). Life centered on the Eucharist is life centered on the very Sacrament of Unity.
Every Sunday Mass, in every language, Catholics collectively profess belief in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. These fourmarks of the Church are her inseparably linked characteristics. They singularize the Church and reflect her mission. The Catechism explains that the Church is one for three reasons: 1) her source, the perfect unity of the Holy Trinity; 2) her founder, Jesus, who reconciled all mankind through His crucifixion and Resurrection; and 3) her “soul”, the Holy Spirit, who dwells in the souls of the faithful, uniting them into one communion of believers and who guides the Church. Unity is the essence of the Church (CCC,813). In Unam Sanctam(1302)Pope Boniface VIII compared the unity of the Church to Christ’s seamless garment, unable to be torn or rent.
My own reconciliation with the Church in March 1999 roused a deep sense that while the oneness of the Church endured despite my departure, the reconciliation somehow fortified the unity. This is true for anyone returning to the Church or joining anew. Unity is reinvigorated. Each assent to the Faith is a genuine grafting into the true Vine, the very life of Christ and His Church, and set to bear that good fruit from the good and true Source. One Lord, one baptism, one bread, one body.
Seven Sisters are poised to also strengthen the accord of the Church. For the sake of our brothers in Christ, each week we open our hearts anew to the Eucharist, that which implies unity but also generates its bonds. Week after week, as our friendship deepens with our Eucharistic Lord, our love is likewise set to well up for the bishop/priest for whom we are committed to pray. Early Church Father, St Irenaeus, articulates something central to our Apostolate: “Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking.” As we enter our Holy Hours as students of intercession relying on the Holy Spirit, we stand to gain guidance and insights into how to proceed in prayer. At the same time, we are refreshing a bond of charity with the priest/bishop and the Church at large, whom he serves and of which we are a part. As the Lord draws us to Himself, He brings us closer to one another – slowly, subtly, surely.
The Catechism asserts something worth pondering: God wills to make human beings holy and to save them, but “not as individuals (emphasis added) without any bond or link between them, but rather to make them into a people who might acknowledge him and serve him in holiness” (CCC, 781). We are in this together because God has designed and deigned it to be thus. “God’s love for us is not a private affair, but a communal reality” (St. Thomas Aquinas). In an intentional, recurring and beautiful way, Seven Sisters live this reality through one heart of prayer!
Frequent reception of Communion unites us more closely to Christ, but also to all who belong to Christ. It strengthens our love and respect for one another. The Eucharist recalls, makes present, and brings about charity. There is more! Msgr Ronald Knox muses that unity also finds its place in our own interiors. “The Blessed Sacrament is the Sacrament of Unity;and when you receive it, it does not merely produce in you more charity toward your neighbor, more loyalty toward the Church, more unselfishness in your human attachments. It makes you more at unity with yourself; it catches up your life into a rhythm that echoes the heavenly music… It comes from you… full of that unifying love which is the bond of the Blessed Trinity” (emphasis added). Oh, sisters in Christ, do we not see these very descriptors in our saintly brothers and sisters! Do we not seek it for ourselves!
In our oneness as an Apostolate, God has called forth a noteworthy diversity: of age (from teens to centenarians), nationalities (6 continents), expression of worship (Novus Ordo, Latin, Byzantine, Ordinariate, Maronite), vocation (married, single, consecrated), fields of work/interest (at-home-moms/G’mas, physicians/nurses, farmers, attorneys, entrepreneurs, teachers, parish/ministry staff, students, retired). What a marvel! Jointly opening our hearts anew to the Eucharist, the source of our strength and our unity, opens the way to a strengthening of the Body of Christ, the Church. May we be one, so that the world may believe! With St Augustine let us acknowledge the gift of our call and unreservedly embrace it: “O sacrament of devotion! O sign of unity! O bond of charity!”

“I am promoting Seven Sisters. I feel passion for this gift of the Holy Spirit that intersects prayer and priests. My Holy Hour for my priest is at 3 am. Gloria to the Lord!” (Angelina, Texas)
“When it was announced that our Parish would be receiving a new priest, I told Our Lord in prayer that I would do whatever the new priest may request of me. Within a week’s time I received an email from the Parish Secretary saying that Father wanted the Seven Sisters Apostolate at our Parish and he thought I should be the one to take this on. What a beautiful ministry. Our priests need our prayers. I am happy to be a part of this very intentional and focused form of prayer to sustain and protect them.” (Gwen, Missouri)
“I am a member of Rosaire, choir and the social communication groups. I love praying for Priests because of the numerous challenges they face in their priestly duties. The temptation they go through on daily basis cannot be overcome without prayers. Our Priests need our prayers.” (Pascaline, Cameroon)
“Thank you for your continued prayer for priests. I can feel its saving power for me. And the same gratitude for my priest-brothers (biological), Fr John (+July ’23) and Fr Leonard (+Jan ’23). I will be 91 this month on Sept 24. Praise and thank God!” (Fr Martin Siebenaler, Minnesota) (B-day card sent from all of us!)
“I’ve been praying for God to lead me in service within my parish. I’m a cradle Catholic and have served in many ministries throughout my years. In conversation with a friend, she presented this ministry. I immediately felt I was being called and said yes. It is an honor. Thank you, Jesus!” (Marilynn, Idaho)
“To watch the growth of the Apostolate has been very empowering and inspiring. I feel so grateful for this Apostolate and have witnessed the blessing and fruit for my son (ordained in 2019) who can testify to the great power of the prayers being offered for him.” (Julie, California)
“I started a Rosary group a few years back, we would pray for priests as a group. I always felt a pull to do more for individual priests. I was asked to be a Seven Sister and saw the fruits. I then felt the need to start a group for this dear priest as he started as a pastor for the first time.” (Margaret, Illinois)
“I was introduced to the Apostolate in a parish other than my own. I did some searching and thought that this should happen in my own parish. Shortly after deciding to move forward, I discovered a meeting in my area to learn all I needed to know to begin a group! I immediately went home and began contacting women of my parish. There was nothing but good support. I feel so blessed to be able to answer this call to support our priest who certainly needs to be wrapped in daily prayer.” (Deborah, Michigan)

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as together we enter the month of September, bearing at its heart that glorious Feast of the Exultation of the Cross (Sept 14). The greatest victory was afforded us through the greatest suffering. That Victory lives!
Our priestly patron, St John Vianney, remained ever-sensitive to the cross and its victory. “Everything is a reminder of the Cross. We ourselves are made in the shape of a cross.” Thus, we literally carry the reminder.St JV added, “It is the fear of crosses which gives weight to the cross…a cross born simply is no longer a cross.” Scripture counsels to not worry about tomorrow for each day has enough trouble of its own. The sufferings and stressors of our day-to-day cannot be avoided, yet Help is near and He fully understands. “Let us look to the cross and be filled with peace, knowing that Christ has walked this road and walks it now with us and with all our brothers and sisters” (St Teresa of Avila).
The bishops/priests for whom we pray fully experience life’s daily grapples, from the miniscule to the mountainous. Many struggles can certainly serve positively as the needed impetus toward a solution; others, especially intense and repeated ones, may bash and bog down even the sturdiest soul. Our prayers of love and support, linked to those of Christ, are set to offer fortification and peace.
A towering Old Testament prophet and priest whose life seemed to leave no struggle unlived is Elijah. His life bears many lessons. He unwaveringly shared God’s messages and warnings despite often stirring intense and adverse reaction. His word burned like a torch. He was a man of steadfast prayer, attentive to the “whispering sound” in the midst of clamor, and whose prayer of faith raised a young boy back to life. His steadfast intercession for rain brought the promise in the appearance of a wisp of a cloud. In jubilation he ran ahead of Ahab’s horse-drawn chariot for several miles.St James reminds us here that Elijah had a nature like ours. What hope and thrill to imagine our own submission to the power of the Holy Spirit!
Numerous times God instructed Elijah to trust for provision when circumstances appeared bleak. In fleeing the murderous threats of the wicked Jezebel, he collapsed, exhausted and dispirited, where an angel roused him and there, he “drank from the brook and ravens brought him bread and meat”. Later, he was provided miraculous sustenance from a widow and her son. Over and again, despite circumstances, Elijah exampled resoluteobedience to God and stood with courage in Him. The waters of discouragement did not overcome. The Lord sent helpers all along the way.
The painting above depicts likely the most colossal witness of Elijah’s faith, hope and love of God as the sole priest in confrontation against 450 prophets of Baal. The challenge was to allow a bull offering to be consumed by fire from above. Despite cries and pleas, the Baal worshippers brought no action from the skies, but Elijah, having doused the offering with water enough to fill a trench, was mightily responded to by God. The offering was consumed, even to licking up the water in the trenches.
Elijah’s legacy endures, first with Elisha and now in a real sense with our bishops/priests. Each is called to imitate this path of unwaveringly sharing God’s message, to be a man of steadfast and faith-filled prayer, to trust in God’s provision despite circumstances, to remain in resolute obedience to God and to remain in resistance of the rising up of false idols. The complexities of stresses and stressors of life (acute and more long-term) can intensely disturb the path of our priests/bishops. In June 2021, Fr Joseph Johnson, Apostolate Chaplain, requested that a Seven Sisters group be formed to pray for priests in various forms of crisis in the Archdiocese of St Paul-Mpls. No names of priests were given. Prayers were to be offered in the reality that there are priests in the Archdiocese that are being challenged with “something today or something long-term”. The response was generous and the group is at or near 21 members (similar to those numbers of intercessors of the bishop groups). Prayerful discernment fittingly presented the name of this fruit of the Apostolate as Elijah’s Helpers.
These are special Hours for special circumstances and carry special supportive graces. Blessed Elijah is our ever-ready, tenacious intercessor. Elijah’s Helpers is growing! Currently twelve Dioceses have active groups, and another dozen Dioceses have groups in various places of formation. Please consider this vital, hope-filled offering for our priests! All inquiries (big and small) to Nancy at ElijahsHelpers@gmail.com or cell: 1-612-756-1107.
No one, however wearied or weakened, is deprived the victory of the Cross. No one is beyond its effect. Let us stand together as the faithful woman at Calvary and not abandon the suffering Christ. Let us call down the fire of His Love! “This is the “folly” of the cross: a folly capable of changing our sufferings into a declaration of love for God and mercy for our neighbor” (Pope Benedict XVI).

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we together anticipate the Feast of our patron and patron of all priests, St John Vianney (Aug 4th). What a perfect impetus to consider the role of shepherd, as we honor this Saint chosen to inspire priests to emulate Christ, the Good Shepherd.
The figure of the shepherd holds lengthy history. Ancient Oriental kings designated themselves as guides and shepherds of the people. Scripture highlights the transformation of Moses and David, both shepherds by trade, as pastors of God’s People. Through the prophet Ezekiel the Lord renders this peace invoking image of Himself: “As a shepherd seeks out his flock… so will I seek out my sheep; and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness” (Ez 34:12). The Psalmist is moved to sing about the Lord as Shepherd who provides everything, so much so, that there is nothing that is wanted. When Jesus stood among us, He declared Himself the Good Shepherd, the One who sacrifices, protects, leads and nourishes – and would call others to do the same.
The title Good Shepherd remains reserved for Jesus alone, but every priest is called to follow in the footsteps of this “shepherd and guardian of your souls.” The priest’s role as shepherd in imitation of Christ as Shepherd is only credibly realized in his submission to allow Christ to explicitly work though him as a shepherd. In Pastores Dabo Vobis (1992) Pope St John Paul II clearly and concisely summarizes the priest as the “head and shepherd of (Jesus) people” who “lives and works in the service of the Church” and “for the salvation of souls”. The priest is indeed a shepherd sent out with a divine plan that is invariably messy and tough business.
(1) Laying down one’s life for his sheep is not settled during an Ordinand’s ceremonial laying prostrate during his Ordination Mass. The sacrifices of our priestly shepherds are customary, daily, the life. “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own.”Our prayers can fortify our shepherds to stay the course and remain keenly sensitive and vigilant to their assigned duties, embracing the graces that are sufficient to the sacrifices that are being asked of them. A growing friendship and fortification through the Holy Spirit are key.
(2) With a shepherd-like heart a priest/bishop is rightly moved to protect those under his care. That protection is manly, fatherly and guided by charity (including tough love as the situation may warrant). Protection can be recognized in unwavering fidelity to the magisterium, helping to set souls free from besetting sin, prudent counsel and action that serve to protect both body and soul. Our prayers can ask for growth in the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. These hinge virtues fuel an authentic desire toward safeguarding those under his protection.
(3) Priests/bishopsare charged with the task of leading people to Jesus Christ. A good shepherd knows his sheep foremost as children of God in search and in pilgrimage toward Home. “I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me.”The flock knows his voice, which should be an echo of the ways of Christ and His Church. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”Our prayers can bolster pastoral hearts to be enlivened despite the strains of leadership, and heartened for the wisdom to guide through so many hopes, sorrows, joys and sufferings within the flock.
(4) “When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.” (Gospel of St Mark) Our priests, as shepherds, know that their flock requires and awaits nourishment. What endless wealth of life-giving goodness, truth and beauty through the treasure trove of the Church! Our prayers can support our shepherds to boldly and unremittingly offer solid doctrine, liturgy and the sacraments to nourish the souls entrusted to him.
Like the stirring detail of Champaigne’s Le Bon Pasteur wherein the lamb seems both calmed and invigorated in its nearness to Christ, may this Communiqué elicit both a contentment but also rouse something anew within our hearts. Artists across the arc of time and meridians of the world have used time and talent to create a seemingly limitless number of portrayals of the Good Shepherd. He is seen standing, searching, sitting, squatting, stretching over a cliff to save. He clutches a staff, coddles a sheep, offers water to a lamb or respite by slinging it over His shoulders. Some depict Jesus alone with one wee sheep, others with vast wandering herds. Iconographers challenge the onlooker to grapple with the mysteries of the Good Shepherd, sculptors reveal both strength and gentleness through their chisels. Others have taken up pastels, chalks, sparkly mosaics and stained glass to incite the imagination. With such varied images, Visio Divina seems a rewarding consideration. Visio Divina (translated “divine seeing”) is related to Lectio Divina (divine reading), but instead of Scripture, this form of reflection uses art to help set one’s mind toward prayer. Let us together learn more about the Good Shepherd and His ways through sacred images and art. Our knowledge and love of the Good Shepherd will indeed prosper, and our prayers for our priest shepherds will indeed flourish!
United in prayer and mission…that our prayers may find the heart of every bishop and priest.… eternal gratitude continues as you each remember to offer a wee Hail Mary for me every day….“One Ave Maria makes hell tremble”(St John Vianney). PRIEST who has PASSED to ETERNAL REST: If the priest for whom you pray has entered eternal life, the group may be led to continue to pray for a length of time for the soul of that priest. Perhaps a novena of Holy Hours or the offering of holy Mass(es) for the priest. You will know. Some groups have/are offering Holy Hours for an entire year for their beloved deceased priest. Groups may be started following the death of a priest that did not have a group prior. This is commendable and welcomed. Please register these special groups through the Web site.

Greetings to dearest Sisters in Christ as we freshly move in solidarity into another committed year of responding to God’s call to pray for our shepherds. At the heart of our commitments is a solid awareness of these sure, living words of Christ Himself: “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He may give it to you” (John 15:16).
God’s purposes according to His choice in each of us will stand. What He says, He will do. One can almost hear the fostering whisper of Mother Church reminding us to “cooperate with the graces.”Michelangelo’s well-recognized finger of God outstretched toward that of Adam is a marvelous visual to help us remember both our littleness in the Presence of God and our potential for the Strength of God. Our Lord is ever-moving toward us, extending invitation, drawing near yet assigning dignity by awaiting our part, our response. God’s biddings often leave us wondering if He is indeed calling us to do this or that. His choice often seems to run counter to our sense of how things should go or who might have been a better choice than the Divine choice. St Paul elucidates (I Cor 1: 26-3): For consider your calling, brothers and sisters, there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen…that no man should boast before God.
If God chose those who were capable in themselves, a temptation might rise to boast. If God chose those who first chose Him, there might be a temptation to crow about that clever choice. Love Himself chooses those the world would never choose, so that when His plans and purposes are fulfilled through them, the glory rightly goes to Him. “Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord.”
Our mission as Seven Sisters includes submission to our personal battles against God’s way of choosing whom He wills to accomplish His purposes: ourselves, those alongside us, those for whom we sacrifice our prayers, those who seem to work against us. Embracing that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9) brings profound liberty. At its very best, our prayers can call forth that God’s Will and Way, His choices, be manifest in ourselves and in those bishops/priests for whom we pray. Where God is most sovereign, we are most free. St Philip Neri reminds, “All of God’s purposes are to the good; although we may not always understand this, we can trust in it.”
It is a privilege indeed as we beseech God’s graces to accomplish His highest plans and purposes in and for another soul – the reward of sanctity. This is the abiding fruit we are summoned to bear. We call forth whatever God wants, when and how He wills it, for the one for whom we pray. St Elizabeth of the Trinity in her Letters from Carmel (Vol 2) gives us a most wonderfully practical way of praying for others in that spirit. Her offering seems meant for Seven Sisters because, well, the prayer is seven words! St Elizabeth contemplates the scene in Scripture where Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus about their brother, Lazarus, “Lord, the one you love is sick…” (John 11:3). St Elizabeth’s insight blossoms from here. She opens wide her heart to the boundless love of the Sacred Heart and seeks that love for every individual in every situation. The prayer is then expanded to encompass endless petitions for the other: “Lord, the one you love is angst-ridden…” … “Lord, the one you love needs hope…” … “Lord, the one you love seeks love…” The simplicity of the petition that is but a breath, fully calls forth the Will and Way of God with complete surrender and trust. This holy example of St Elizabeth can be put into effectual practice in our Holy Hours. “Lord, the one you love needs rest…” … “Lord, the one you love is gift…”
St John tells us that God’s choice and appointment of our lives moves us to bear abiding fruit – and also that whatever we ask the Father in Christ’s Name will be given. Oh, sisters in Christ – the great joy this should bring us – now and eternally! Our calling holds promises, but also bids perseverance to press forward. Let us open wide our hearts to the fullness of what we have been chosen for. In like manner we can do nothing less than call the same forward for the bishop/priest for whom we commit to pray. Yes, calling forth allthat God has chosen them to be. St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) fortifies our inner resolve and its happy fruitful outcome in this thought: “Surrender without reservation to the Lord who has called us. This is required of us so that the face of the earth may be renewed.” Let us give our unrestrained fiat!

With permission of His Excellency, Bishop William Joensen (Des Moines, Iowa) to reprint here. This is a prayer intention he requested of his Seven Sisters group: “May the prayers of this Apostolate seek Wisdom and Truth from the One who is the Way, Truth, and Life, and from his Mother Mary, Seat of Wisdom. May they be a source of blessings in the ministries of teaching, pastoral outreach, leadership and the unification of God’s holy ones in the Church, and may they promote the sanctification of all priests. May all clergy—bishops, priests, and deacons—and those who pray for them be showered with grace upon grace.”
“This is such a beautiful ministry and each sister that has volunteered takes this very seriously and is so grateful to be able to cover our wonderful priest in prayers and blessings. Thank you!” (Jenn, Louisiana)
“We have enough women to have three priests covered, so this Apostolate has touched the hearts of many women. In a world where you feel helpless against the daily onslaught of evil, this invitation to prayer and sacrifice is so beautifully designed for our maternal hearts!” (Rebecca, New York)
“The graces are abundant with sisters telling me that they look forward to praying the Holy Hour, that it has deepened their faith, and they see the fruits of their prayers for our beloved pastor of inspiring homilies, increased devotion to Our Lady, and increased devotion to the sacrament of reconciliation, to name a few. Father is so happy and grateful! I love this Apostolate!” (Elizabeth, Massachusetts)
“I started praying a Sacred Heart novena specifically for our Seven Sisters group along with an increase in worldwide Seven Sisters’ groups. May the Seven Sisters continue to spread far and wide.” (Nancy, Illinois)
“I am in love with Christ’s Church and her shepherds. I find a sense of great solidarity in prayer with others. I find much comfort in reading the beautiful letters and Communiques.” (Sue, Minnesota)
“A few years ago, there was an article in our bulletin about the Seven Sisters Apostolate. I had not heard of it so did some research and felt it was a much-needed ministry. That year, four of us formed a group and prayed our Holy Hour Tuesday-Friday for our parish priest. The following year two more joined, and this year a seventh has joined so we are able to register. We feel this ministry can be challenging but is very important and rewarding.” (Corrine, Canada)
ELIJAH’s HELPERS: By prayerful desire and directive of our Apostolate Chaplain, Fr Johnson, a pilot group of Seven Sisters intercessors dedicated to offering Holy Hours for priests in various forms of crisis (no names known) within the Archdiocese of St Paul-Mpls, began in June 2021. In June 2022, this fruit of the Apostolate opened to form more groups in more Dioceses. All inquiries to Nancy at ElijahsHelpers@gmail.com or cell: 612-756-1107. It is growing! Please consider this!

Our Chaplain, strongly urges formation of these groups. There is a form on the Website to register.
LAMP-BEARERS: In January 2020, Lamp-Bearers, so-named for their action of continually ‘filling of their lamps with the oil of prayer’, was launched to pray for the Apostolate at large. Each intercessor prays a minimum of once per week, many are offering prayers every day. Intentions gleaned from topics and calendar points in the monthly Communique and also sent to members on the second or third Sunday of the month. Additional intercessors welcomed.
